As the standard of literacy is not static but ever-changing, we need historically study it. Indeed, literacy is conditioned and even controlled by such historical and material factors as the reading habit of the public, the publishing market, and the circulation of books. In this article, I will introduce several earlier historical approaches to literacy and critically see their values, possibilities, and defects in order to suggest a new historical study on literacy.
