The “onmyōji” in the Engyō and the Nagato editions of Heike-monogatari was modeled after a yin-and-yang master of the Abe-no-Yasuchika school. The character has been regarded just as an “onmyōji” of the Abe clan, but such wholesale categorization overlooks an obvious distinction between the two masters Abe-no-Yasuchika and Abe-no-Tokiharu. Their different profiles came from the internal dissension over the orthodoxy of “onmyōdō” after the late twelfth century.
In the Noh play Teika Fujiwara-no-Teika's mountain villa called Shigure-no-chin is located at Senbon in Kyoto. While it was already a famous site around the time of the completion of Sairinwaka-shū, it had gradually become a place for preserving the memory of the poet since it was used as the setting of the play. In the course of time its symbolic function caused Shōkoku-ji or even a temple in Ogura-yama to bear the name of Shigure-no-chin. This is why it is located in Ogura-yama in a jōruri version of Teika.
Monshō (1934) is a novel in which Riichi Yokomitsu sought after a way of finding the incipiency of a scientific breakthrough in daily life rather than in the theoretical frontiers of science. In the novel there appears an engineer named Hachirō Karigane whose achievement of invention is ultimately measured according to its contribution to the national policy. In the figure of the engineer is reflected the historical situation where professional engineers became involved in the military regime. In this sense Monshō is a novel in which one can find the incipiency of the author's blatant nationalism in wartime.
“Inochigake” (1940) is recognized as Ango Sakaguchi's earliest historical novel and has often been studied to identify its historical sources and solve the problem of discontinuity between the first part and the second part. What is important, however, is to explore such textual discontinuity caused by contradictions and tensions in the way of narrating history between fiction and facts. Emphasizing the novel's uniqueness in comparison with other contemporary works, this paper points out its critical stance to the genre of historical novels.
