The Kumamoto-Oita earthquake has a great impact on tourism and related industries in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures. Natural disasters not only have a direct impact on local tourism demand but also cause indirect economic damage to large areas through tourism-related industries. This study estimates the interregional input-output table for 18 regions in Kumamoto and Oita prefectures and measures the tourism economic damage caused by the Kumamoto-Oita earthquake and its spatial economic effect. The fluctuations in tourism demand in each region are estimated based on the annual number of Japanese and foreign visitors before and after the Kumamoto-Oita earthquake. The study measures the induced products, number of induced employments, and the indirect spatial spillover effects of tourism damage.

This study discusses the relationship between the tourism industry and the career choices of non-natives who resettle in Kakeroma Island, Amami Oshima. The tourism industry on Kakeroma Island is operated mostly by people who moved there in the 1990s due to the increased popularity of scuba diving. While the Amami Islands are gaining attention after being registered as a World Natural Heritage site, this study attempts to analyze the relationship between the tourism industry and the career choices of non-natives on Kakeroma Island, based on a survey of non-natives conducted in 2020. Working from the analysis, this study sets out the relationship between the tourism industry and non-natives’ career choices. 　The survey showed that non-natives’career choices are affected by the presence of financial support from the Fund for the Promotion and Development of the Amami Islands. Additionally, the tourism and primary industries operated by non-natives are diversified and interrelated. It was further, revealed that, due to its characteristics, the tourism industry on the island plays a role in employing non-natives. At the same time, they tend to choose their careers from the viewpoint of economic rationality.

In this study, we investigated the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the regional tourism economy and tourism dynamics of the Noto region by focusing on the number of sales of ”Noto-don.” Noto-don is a local gourmet rice bowl jointly developed by several restaurants using local ingredients, which is a primary attraction for tourists. An integrated analysis of sales, traffic, and number of visitors revealed the success of ”local-tourism,” which mainly targets people living in a limited geographic area close to the destination, which may include neighboring prefectures. This study also showed the importance of food-related statistics as an economic indicator.
