Theological Studies in Japan

Okinawa was occupied by the U. S. Armed Forces after World War II. It served as the starting point of that control system from 1945 until 50. In that age, Christianity became the core of the mental reconstruction of the community. The Christianity of Okinawa then expanded this power by enriching political relations with the occupation forces. This paper demonstratively clarifies these facts by analyzing the memorandums of the concerned persons in those days and the first historical materials. During that period, the Christians in Okinawa established the “Christ League of Okinawa” and propagated Christianity in a systematic manner. They received the indirect support of the U. S. Armed Forces. A part of the Christian leaders made maximum use of this support and tried to favorably proceed with the postwar reconstruction. They partly acknowledged military occupation. On the other hand, another leader maintained a bridge between the Occupation Forces and the Okinawan government. They devoted themselves to the mission's activities. Such two tides existed in the Christianity of Okinawa later on as well.

Adolf von Harnack hat im Jahr 1900 „Das Wesen des Christentums” verfasst. Es ist ein repräsentatives Buch der liberalen Theologie und drückt zugleich die eigenen Gedanken Harnacks aus. Danach wurde er zu Lebzeiten und nach seinem Tod wegen seinem Begriff des Judentums hart kritisiert. Leo Baeck hat auf Harnacks Missverständnis vom Pharisäer hingewiesen und gegen „Das Wesen des Christentums”, „Das Wesen des Judentums“ geschrieben, um die Unabhängigkeit des Judentums vom Christentum zu behaupten. Martin Buber hat Harnacks Gedanken am strengsten im Zusammenhang mit dem Nationalsozialismus getadelt, und seine Auffassung übte schwerwiegende Einflüsse auf das 20. Jahrhundert aus. In Wahrheit ist es sehr schwer, ein Urteil über die Beziehung zwischen Harnack und Antisemitismus abzugeben. Andererseits kann man aufgrund einiger Beweise vermuten, dass Harnack dem Judentum nicht abgeneigt war.

Im vorliegenden Aufsatz handelt es sich um “die Idee des Aufbaues” von Ernst Troeltsch, die die Hauptsache des vierten Kapitels seines letzten Hauptwerks “Historismus und seine Probleme” ist. Durch die Betrachtung dieser Idee wird es versucht, das “Doppelgesicht” seines historischen Denkens aufzuklären. Der Leitfaden dafür ist die rätselhafte Formel “Geschichte durch Geschichte überwinden”, die sich auf der letzten Seite des Historismus-Bandes findet. Diese Formel soll im textlichen Zusammenhang gelesen werden, in den sie Troeltsch selbst stellt. Daraus ergibt sich, dass Troeltsch mit der Idee des Aufbaues die zwei Schlüsselbegriffe verbinden wollte: “Universalgeschichte” und “gegenwärtige Kultursynthese”. Die Idee des Aufbaues bedeutet nämlich die universalgeschichtliche Re-Konstruktion der vergangenen Geschichte, auf der anhand der gegenwärtigen Kultursynthese die Zukunft gebaut wird. Während die Idee des Aufbaues und die Formel “Geschichte durch Geschichte überwinden” bisher vorwiegend im Zusammenhang mit der gegenwärtigen Kultursynthese ausgelegt wurde, soll man auch die Bedeutung der Universalgeschchte als der historischen Reflexion erwägen.

The Ssial thought of HAM Sokhon is based on a Biblical historical view and hardship. He used the symbol ‘Queen of Suffering’ as an interpretation of Korean history. ‘A woman in the pain of labor’ was a ‘Queen of Suffering’ to him. In fact, the Ssial thought of HAM Sokhon completes the idea that one must strengthen one's mind, train hard and resist suffering. In this way, an old woman comes to realize from within that some things cannot be taken away by others. What kind of changes occurred in HAM Sokhon that led to his Ssial thought? He added a study of Eastern classics to two of his main lines of thought (the first line was about the common people and the second line was about history) in 1935.
