The patch test of 3837 cosmetics were performed on 505 patients having eczematous, dermatits like lesions, acne vulgaris and chloasma localized on the face. From the viewpoint of the results, characteristics of various kinds of cosmetics were examined. Five percent in the examined cosmetics showed allergic reaction and strong irritant reaction which continues over 24 hours was 7 percent. Many lotions indicated primary irritant reaction, liquid cream had higher positive percentage value compared with that of cream. In majority of foundation creams, toilet powders, lip stics, rouges, packs and eye shadows, primary irritant reactions were dominant. Almost of detergent type cleansing creams showed high percentage value of strong primary irritant and allergic reactions.

Percutaneous absorption of hydrocortisone-17-butyrate was studied by means of autoradiography. In time course study, dense silver grain deposition was seen on the horny layer treated with ODT for short time, then the deposition gradually increased as the duration of application became longer. A little deposition was present on the Malpighian layer of the epidermis and skin appendages. Reservoir phenomenon at 24 hours after removal of the ointment was shown. In conclusion, this corticosteroid seemed to deposit on the horny layer shortly after the topical application, then be removed promptly into dermal circulation via trans-epidermal and trans-appendageal routes.

The studies on adrenocortical suppression effects following the local administration of 0.1% hydrocortisone-17-butyrate cream on one subject with the normal skin and the two subjects with psoriatic skin have been carried out. Adrenocortical suppression effects following the local application of 0.1% hydrocortisone-17-butyrate cream were detected by the determination of plasma corticosteroid level, 17-OHCS in urine and the fluctuation of numbers of circulatory eosinophilic leucocytes in the experiments, in which the patients with psoriasis vulgaris were treated with 60 gm per day applied under plastic film and simple innoculation, and in which the normal subject was treated with 60 gm per day under plastic film.
