In this paper, disturbances in liver function of the tumor bearers and its changes by administration of antitumor agent have been investigated in the light of the liver and serum transaminase, serum alkaline phosphatase, and serum sorbitol dehydrogenase.
Clinical studies were made by 105 patients with gastrointestinal cancer (chiefly stomach. cancer) and 70 patients with the benign gastrointestinal disease as control, and experimental studies by Donryu rat in which was inoculated Ascites hepatoma, AH 130 and AH 7974.
    Results were summerized as follows.
    1. So far as liver and serum transaminase, serum A. P. and serum S. D. H. indicated, liver disorder of inoperable gastric cancer patients was more virulent than that of operable gastric cancer patients, and liver metastasis cases in stomach cancer and bepatoma most virulent.
    2. Elevation of the liver transaminase in gastric cancer was slightly observed by preoperative administration of antitumor agent, and more slight elevation of serum trgnsaminase. Generally speaking, liver transaminase activity in gastric cancer patient was inversely relative to serum transaminase activity with some exception. Light disorder of liver function was recognized by postoperative administration of antitumor agent, irrespective of influences on enzyme activity by operation.
    3. Liver disturbance of inoperable stomach and bile duct cancer and inoperable hepatoma diminished for a while by intravenous injection of antitumor agent.
    4. Liver disorder of rat treated with antitumor agents was paralleled with increase in their dosages. Liver disorder by agents used decreased as follows:
    E-39-S>Chr A3>MMC>Thio TEPA≥Cvclop.
    (Chr A3Chromomycin A3)(MMC-Mitomycin C)(Cyclop.-Cyclophosphamide)
No significant differences in liver disturbance were observed between intermittent and continuous administration.
    5. Liver disturbance of tumor-bearing rat by Thio TEPA and Cyclop was severer than that by Chr A3and MMC.
    6. Liver disorder of tumor-bearing rat increased proportionally with development of tumor or ascites, but it was repressed by antitumor agent administration.
    7. In all clinical cases reported above, no severe disturbance of liver function could be shown by pre-and post-operative administration of MMC 60 mg, Chr A3 15 mg, Thio TEPA 200mg, or Cyclop. 3000mg, during 3 weeks.

    1. Zinc sulfate turbidity test was performed on 3984 apparently healthy individuals, from which 1139 healthy individuals were selected for determining the normal value.
    2. The normal value obtained ranged from 0.35 to 4.54 units, and there was no significant relationship found on the age and drinking habit.
    3. The individuals who had had tuberculosis tended to have higher units than that of the normal individuals.
    4. The individuals who had abnormal tests for urinalysis, blood pressure and ECG, and abnormal physical findings, had a tendency to have higher units than that of the normal individuals.
