The author studiel histological, cytological and functional changes of the liver remnants after the partial hepatectomy in rats and rabbits.
Soon after the partial hepatectomy, the liver functions generally were diminished, but RNA in cytoplasrna and the activity of alkaline phosphatase were increased. Later recovery of carbohydrate metabolism was recognized, but many other functions were slow in their recovery.
That is, the repairing functions were increased at first. The fact that some liver functions were reduced, is likely to have been influenced by the increased activities of these repairing functions. This might be suggestive of a “compensatory mechanism.”
Both methionine and Vitamin B
12 have lipotropic function even in liver remnants, and also accelerate the increase of RNA and morphological changes of mitochondria. The former has a function to depress the changes of albumin and γ-globulin in the blood. The latter markedly eliminates hyperchromic anemia due to partial hepatectomy, and. maitains normal growth of erythrocytes.
