The inhibitory effect of chlorella extract (c. ext.) on the elimination of episomes was studied in detail.
i) We observed that the elimination of F-lac
+ in E.
coli K 12 by acridine treatment was inhibited in the presence of c. ext. in the penassay broth. When acridine orange was added at 40 μg/ml, 100 per cent of the population became F-, but, in the presence of 10% (v/v) of c. ext., only 10 per cent of the population became F-.
ii) The elimination of ρ factor in yeast by acridine treatment was also inhibited in the presence of c. ext., and the elimination of ρ factor by the treatment with Cu or Mn was similarly inhibited by c. ext.
iii) The inhibitory effect of c. ext. on the elimination of F factor was observed even in the enriched medium such as Brain Heart Infusion.
iv) The addition of yeast extract, malt extract, or casamino acid in place of c. ext. did not inhibit the elimination.
v) In the broth containing c. ext., F-lac
+ cells grew at a similar rate to F- cells, so that the selective effect of c. ext. was excluded.
vi) C. ext. did not contain nucleic acids sufficient to inhibit the elimination with aridine dye by binding with the dye.
