This report deals with the examination of the essential oil of
Mentha gentilis L. grown in Sanyo area which contains (+)-pulegone (1), (-)-menthone (2) and (+)-neomenthol (3) as the major constituents. The composition of these components in each oil harvested at the blooming time of the plant in the above area and our university was shown as the followings: the former contained 1 (28.9%), 2 (31.0%) and 36 (22.6%), and the latter, 1 (42.6%), 2 (30.8%) and 3 (9.5%). To clarify this discrepancy, the oils collected in the different seasons were examined: the oil from the plant cultivated in our university was shown to contain 1 (44.0%), 2 (28.1%) and 3 (11.2%) in August, and 1 (22.7%), 2 (38.3%) and 3 (28.9%) in September, and 1 (1.8%), 2 (42.4%) and 3 (44.6%) in October, respectively. On the basis of the above fact, it has been found that this
gentilis shows different composition of the major components when cultivated at the different places, although the biosynthetic process as pulegone→menthone→neomenthol of the strain is not changed.
