The steam volatile oils of
Trigonotis peduncularis Benth. (Japanese name,
kyuuri-gusa) of the family Boraginaceae, were obtained in 0.013-0.023% yield from fresh total aerial parts, and were studied by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Seventy-four components were identified: 21 fatty acids, 20 alcohols, 14 hydrocarbons, 12 carbonyls, and 7 other kinds of compounds. Traces of terpenes were found, with only linalool, α-terpineol, and geraniol being identified.
The Japanese name of this plant refers to the cucumber-like aroma produced when leaves and stems are crushed. The aroma were characterized by the following compounds with chains of nine carbons:
n-nonanal,
n-nonanol,
cis-3-nonen-1-ol,
cis-6-nonen-1-ol, and
cis, cis-3, 6-nonadien-1-ol.
These compounds were generated from the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids by plant enzymes.
