    The spindle-shaped bundles of fibrils with cross-striation, consisting of dark-stained band of 280-300Åin diameter and of light-stained band of 1400-1450Åin diameter, are found in the heart muscle of the mouse.
    The light-stained bands which run across the dark-stained band are composed of numerous fine fibrils of approximately 50Åin diameter. The peculiar myofibrils increased in frequency of the appearance about 30% in the anoxic experimental conditions. The mechanism of the formation of these myofibrils remains unknown, but it is assumed from the present study that they tend to appear when the arrangement of the actin and myosin filaments becomes disordered and when T tubules undergo excessive winding and rotation, as a result of the abnormal repetition of contraction and stretch of the heart muscle.

    Mucous cysts are observed in the medulla of the thymus of new born mice. Three types of cells, mucous cell, ciliated cell and cell with microvilli, can be seen in the wall of cysts. In addition, degenerating cells and large phagosomes are occasionally found in the wall. The mucous cells contain lamellar arrays of the rough endoplasmic reticulum, prominent Golgi apparatus, and mucous granules which can be subdivided into three groups according to their sizes and components. Epithelium lining the cysts are not surrounded by the basal lamina. Cytochemical studies indicate that the Golgi apparatus, mucous granules, and intracystal material contain glycoprotein. Acid phosphatase activity is negative in the mucous granules. The possible origin of these actively mucus-secreting structures will be discussed.

    After having compared the four“Ontleedkundige Tafelen”the author may summarize the experiences made as follows: 1. From the chronological point of view the book“Ontleedkundige Tafelen”in the possession of the University of Tokyo should be the oldest one, the one belonging to Professor R. Ootori the second oldest one, the edition belonging to Professor M. Ogawa the newest and the one in the possession of the Tenri-University the second latest.2. The book“Ontleedkundige Tafelen”has been improved again and again, in particular regarding the printing of individual letters, printed figures, illustrations, the kind of book-binding, etc. in order to make the book still more useful.3. The author is convinced that the Dutch people certainly didn't alter the year of publication in order to increase the merits of the author.4. The illustrations were used much more frequently than the text and nobody would have been given the permission, to alter the text written by the author.5. After having compared the illustrations of the book“Ontleedkundige Tafelen”with those of the book“Kaitaishinsho”it became clear to us that the book of the same edition in the possession of the University of Tokyo is the original of the book“Kaitaishinsho”. Schlußwort. Nach dem Vergleich der vier“Ontleedkundige Tafelen”kann der Verfasser die von ihm gemachten Erfahrungen wie folgt zusammenfassen:
    1. Chronologisch gesehen musste das Buch“Ontleedkundige Tafelen”im Besitz der Tokio Universitat das alteste, das Herrn Prof. R. Ootori gehorende das zweitalteste, das Herrn Prof. M. Ogawa gehorende das neueste and das im Besitz der Tenri Universitat das zweitneueste sein.2. Das Buch“Ontleedkundige Tafelen”ist immer wieder verbessert worden, besonders hinsichtlich der Druckbuchstaben, der Druckziffern, seiner Abbildungen, der Art des Buchbindens, usw., um das Buch noch nutzlicher zu machen.3. Der Verfasser ist davon uberzeugt daßdas niederlandische Volk das Publikationsjahr sicherlich nicht geandert hat, um die Verdienste des Autors aufzuwerten.4. Die Abbildungen wurden viel hiiufiger als der Text benutzt und niemandem ware es gestattet worden, den vom Verfasser geschriebenen Text zu andern.5. Nach Vergleich der Abbildungen des Buches“Ontleedkundige Tafelen”mit denen des Buches“Kaitaishinsho”ist uns klar geworden daßdas Buch in der gleichen Ausgabe von dem Buch im Besitz der Tokio Universitat das Original des Buches“Kaitaishinsho”ist.

    1. The process of Wallerian degeneration was investigated in the pyramidal tract of rhesus monkeys which had experimental lesions in the brain and had survived for a variety of periods, from 3 to 787 days, after physiological and neurological studies of the pyramidal tract lesions.2. The nervous tissue samples were embedded in Epon 812 and observed by electron microscopy of ultra-thin sections and by light microscopy of semi-thin sections. In this way, it was shown that both normal and degenerated nerve fibers could be clearly identified, even by light microscopy.3. The thick fibers of the pyramidal tract were attacked and engulfed by phagocytes at an early stage of 7 days after operation in such a manner that the phagocytes invaded the myelin tubes via the nodes of Ranvier, and engulfed the fragmented axons and myelin lamellae which had been peeled off from the paranodal regions. However, these phagocytes soon disappeared from the degenerated areas. Phagocytes then reappeared rapidly among the nerve fibers about 9 weeks later, and intensively phagocytosed the degenerated myelin sheaths which had not been consumed at the early stage, converting them into lipid droplets. These phagocytes may be more reasonably considered as reactive microglia, or if not so, exogenous macrophages.4. The thin fibers were degenerated slowly and disappeared probably by phagocytosis and by an autolytic process.
