    Summary: The authors performed complex carbohydrate histochemistry on the mucous cells of the Japanese macacue and concluded the following:
    1. Mucous cells are considered to have neutral, weak and strong acid mucopolysaccharides (type I). However, another type exists which lacks strong acid mucopolysaccharides (type II).2. A. B. (pH 1.0 and 0.5), LID-A. B. (pH 2.5) and HID-A. B. (ph 2.5) methods distinctly demonstrate the presence of the two types of mucous cells.
    3. The reaction of A. B. (pH 23) is stronger in type I than in type II. Therefore, this technique can distinguish type I from type II.
    4. There is no remarkable difference in reaction to neutral mucopolysaccarides between type I and type II.
    5. The reactio n to weak acid mucopolysaccharide is slightly weaker in type II than in type I.
    6. Both types of mucous cell contain acid mucous of types I and II, and type I mucous cells have type III acid mucous.

    Summary. The authors investigated mucous cells in the major and minor salivary glands of the Japanese macaque and concluded the following:
    1. Submandibular gland: The mucous acini of this gland are of type II (containing neutral and weak acid mucopolysaccharides).
    2. Sublingua l gland: The mucous acini of this gland are composed of two types, with type II outnumbering type I (containing neutral, weak and strong acid mucopolysaccharides).
    3. Minor sublingual glands: The mucous components of this gland include two types, with type I greatly outnumbering type II.
    4. Upper, lower labial, buccal and palatine glands: All of the mucous acini of these glands are of type I.
    5. Retro m olar glands; The mucous acini definitely surpass the seromucous ones in number, and type I greatly outnumbers type II.
    6. Glands in the root of the tongue: The mucous components of these glands include two types, with type I greatly outnumbering type II.
    7. Mucous glands neighboring the glands of von Ebner: These glands are composed of two types, and both types almost equal in number.

    Summary: Complex carbohydrate histochemistry of the surface and gastric pit epitheliums of the Japanese macaque was performed and the following conclusions were made:
    1. Reactions to neutral and acid mucopolysaccharides are generally moderate, however, reactions to neutral mucosubstances in the body and pylorus are fairly clear.
    2. Neutral mucopolysaccharides do not surpass weak acid ones.
    3. Reactions to strong acid mucopolysaccharides are extremely faint.
    4. Complex carbohydrates in the surface and gastric pit epitheliums bear some resemblance to those of type H mucous cells (Imai et al.).
    5. There is no difference in the degree of reaction between the surface and gastric pit epithelium; however, Tsujimura recognized such a difference in the dog.

    Summary: Morphological investigation of the ultimobranchial body (Ult) of the Urodeles amphibian red-bellied Japanese newt (Cynops pyrrhogaster) revealed that it had only one Ult located on the left behind the arch of the aorta between the paired thyroid glands and parathyroid glands to the left of the trachia. The Ult had no capsule and consisted of a group of follicles. The follicles were made up of the cubic epithetical cells. The average size of the Ult was 350 μm (canio-caudal length) × 210 μm (ventro-dorsal length) × 420 μm (left-right length). The follicular cells of the Ult were differentiated by lead-hematoxylin staining. They also reacted positively in the immunohistochemical method using antiserum against pig calcitonin. This was a clear indication that these cells were related to the secretion of calcitonin.

    Summary: A rare anomaly, in which the left common carotid directly gave rise to the superior thyroid, the lingual, the facial and the ascending pharyngeal arteries and divided into the external and internal carotid arteries at a high level, was found in a 52-year-old Japanese male among cadavers for student dissection. The occipital artery in this case arose from the internal carotid. A similar case has been reported previously by Kubota (1950).

    Summary: A rare case of anastomosis between the dorsal pancreatic and inferior mesenteric arteries is reported. In this case, an unusual descending branch from the dorsal pancreatic artery compensated for the function of the left colic artery.
