    The dorsal lingual surface of a barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia) was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The tongue was about 20 cm in length. There were about 30 vallate papillae on both sides. Filiform, conical, fungiform and vallate papillae were found. The filiform papillae were distributed over the entire dorsal surface of the tongue, excepted for the lingual torus where conical papillae were present. The fungiform papillae were present rounded bodies, and more densely distributed as compared to that of the lingual body on the tip and ventral surface of lingual apex. No foliate papillae were seen on the dorsal surface. The vallate papillae were located on both sides of the midline in the caudal part. Each papilla was surrounded by a groove. These findings indicate that the tongue of the barbary sheep is similar to that of the formosan serow, japanese serow and blackbuck.

    Retroaortic left renal vein was found in a 55-year-old male cadaver during a student course anatomical dissection. This anomaly coursed dorsal to the abdominal aorta and opened into the inferior vena cava at the upper level of the 3rd lumbar vertebra. This retroaortic left renal vein connected directly to the azygos vein system and the 3rd lumbar vein. It also received the posterior suprarenal and posterior inferior phrenic veins.

    This study was conducted to evaluate the acute effects of caffeine on the ultrastructure of the parathyroid glands in golden hamsters. Caffeine was given orally at either 2.5 mg (low dose) or 10 mg (high dose) per 100 g body weight. Caffeine caused a dose dependent decrease of the serum calcium level 2 hours after administration. Transmission electron microscopy of the parathyroid gland revealed that the volume densities occupied by the Golgi complexes and rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) were found significantly higher 2 hours after receiving high dose of caffeine. Statistical analysis revealed no significant differences regarding to the bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD).
    It is considered that the synthesis of parathyroid hormone is stimulated following caffeine administration.

    Unmyelinated nerve fibers of the oculomotor nerve have occasionally been observed in experimental animals with the use of electron microscopes, but no details concerning normal oculomotor nerves in humans have been published. We measured and analyzed unmyelinated nerve fibers in the human oculomotor nerve with an image analyzer and a computer, using a new staining method, the Luxol fast blue-periodic acid-Schiff-hematoxylin (LPH) discriminative staining method which is the only one suitable for morphometric research on nervous tissues. We studied the numbers and transverse areas of unmyelinated fibers of the oculomotor nerve in 20 cadavers. The number of unmyelinated axons did not change with age, but the mean transverse area decreased with age. These fibers were distributed diffusely in the transverse area of the oculomotor nerve, not localized in any part of the nerve. These findings may be important for the analysis of clinical and neurological signs in relation to aging and ophthalmologic functions.

    Lectin-binding patterns in the testes of the northern smooth-tailed tree shrew, Dendrogale murina and Java tree shrew, Tupaia javanica were studied by light microscopy and compared the data with those of the common tree shrew. Four lectins (PNA, SBA, BPA and GS-II) were used in this study. Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) agglutinin (PNA), soybean (Glycine max) agglutinin (SBA) and Bauhinia purpurea agglutinin (BPA) showed a strong reaction in the acrosomal region from Golgi to acrosome-phase spermatids in three species of tree shrews. These lectins also showed a granular positive reaction in the cytoplasm from acrosome to maturation-phase spermatids in three species, except that BPA revealed no granular reaction (though it was positive) in the spermatid cytoplasm of the northern smooth-tailed tree shrew and that PNA revealed no reacion in the spermatid cytoplasm of the common tree shrew. While, Griffonia simplicifolia-II agglutinin (GS-II) showed a positive reaction in the acrosomal region of Golgi-phase spermatids in three species of tree shrews. Although GS-II was positive in the spermatocyte cytoplasm of three species, it showed granular in the northern smooth-tailed tree shrew and common tree shrew but not granular in the Java tree shrew. Thus, the lectin-binding patterns in testes were similar among three species belonging to the Order Scandentia. However, slight differences were also detected even among these phylogenetically-close species.

    The present study attempted to clarify the characteristics of the guttural pouch mucosa in equines and to evaluate its foreign substance clearance ability. The specimens were collected from nine regions (eight in the guttural pouch mucosa, and one in the nasopharynx mucosa). We first examined the pouch mucosa by light and electron microscopy. We then measured the frequency of goblet cells per 200 epithelial cells, the length of the cilia, the thickness of the epithelial cell layer and lamina propria and statistically analyzed the data. The guttural pouch mucosa consisted of stratified columnar epithelia with brush-like cilia, and there were almost no histological differences between adults and foals. The morphometrical study revealed significant differences in goblet cell frequency (p<0.001) and the thickness of lamina propria (p<0.05). By contrast, no statistically significant difference was detected in the length of the cilia or the thickness of the epithelial cell layer. These findings suggest that the guttural pouch mucosa provides foreign substance clearance ability, but that its ability varies among different regions of the epithelium.

    The postnatal development of the three-dimensional structure and arrangement of the tendon cells in the calcaneal tendon of rats from 5 to 90 days of age were examined under the scanning and the transmission electron microscope (SEM and TEM).
    Exposed tendon cells were seen as winged bricks with a stellate profile in a cross section. Their slender perikarya were stacked successively in rows along the long axis of the tendon. The plate-like cytoplasmic processes, which were oriented along the perikaryal long axis, extended radially and joined those of the neighboring cells in rows.
    Therefore, the tubular channels for collagen fascicles were lined with the chained perikarya and their processes of the tendon cells. The cell rows were usually composed of many cells in developing stages, while short rows of one or two cells were observed in the fully developed stage.
    The cytoplasmic processes were the primary processes in the lateral extension, and their fine branches formed the secondary processes. The secondary processes were numerous at younger stages, showing a fine meshwork due to their mutual joining in the cross sections. In advanced stages, the meshes were coarse and the secondary processes were also perforated either with grouped fenestrations or large pores. In the fully developed stage, the secondary processes were fragmented on the perikarya, while the primary processes extended in the thin delicate sheets with large perforations.
    The findings in the present study suggest that the tendon cells are arranged in a three-dimensional network by their mutual joining. The tendon cells of the rat calcaneal tendon may not proliferate very much after birth, but do expand their nursing area in line with normal growth by an elongation of the main primary processes and a reduction of the secondary processes and perikaryal mass. The interfascicular clefts, which were caused by an intervention of either the processes at any developmental stages or the fragmented processes at a certain level of the tendon, may also play a role in the passage of tissue fluid.

    In the present study, the morphometric changes that occur in the human ophthalmic neve fibers during the aging process were analyzed with the use of new discriminative staining method, which permits simultaneous observation of the axon and surrounding myelin sheath. Morphometric data on axons were collected in 45 human cadavers. A significant reversed correlation was observed between those data and the age of the subject. Our results indicate that definite changes occur in the ophthalmic nerve during the aging process.
