    This light and scanning electron microscopic (SEM) study on the tongue of a newborn Stejneger's beaked whale (Mesoplodon stejnegeri) demonstrated a clear difference in its form from than that of other cetacean and adult Stejneger's beaked whales. This newborn Stejneger's beaked whale had a spoon-like shaped tongue. The dorsal surface in the center part of the tongue was flat and did not have papillae, but there were marginal papillae and small papillae on the anterior part of the tongue. In the posterior of the tongue, hillock-shaped papillae with taste buds on the epithelium were observed.

    Age-related inhibition of salivary secretion has been demonstrated in rats, and the nitric oxide (NO) present in the supraoptic nucleus (SON) and the medial septal area has been reported to play an inhibitory role in the regulation of salivary secretion. In the present study, we investigated the age-related changes occurring in the NO synthase (NOS)-expressing neurons in the SON, which is related to the production of NO, and discussed the interrelation between the age-related changes in the NOS-expressing neurons and the age-related inhibition of salivary secretion. Nissl staining and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase (NADPH-d) histochemistry were performed for young adult and aged rats. Quantitative analysis was also performed using the Nissl-stained and NADPH-dpositive neurons. Although the numbers of the Nissl-stained neurons did not change, significant age-related increases were detected in cell number, cell size and reactive density of the NADPH-d-positive neurons. Therefore, the production of NO in the SON neurons increased with age.
    We concluded that the age-related increase in the NO in the SON might be a factor that contributes to the agerelated inhibition of salivary secretion.

    We have conducted a study to compare various preparation methods, including a certain number of new methods, to find which ones are best suited to the morphological evaluation of nerve fibers in the pyramidal tract of the human medulla oblongata. Our main concern was to find fixation and staining methods that would minimize errors, especially regarding the tissue shrinkage ratio and the ease of staining. From the two fixation methods we examined, the most satisfactory was the secondary chromic acid fixation (which gave the best overall results when followed by nitrocellulose embedding), as it gives the lowest shrinkage ratio with the narrowest range (10 ± 0%). Among the ten staining methods we tested, we found that the most suitable for morphological evaluation were the discriminative staining methods (Luxol fast blue-Periodic acid-Schiff-Hematoxylin stain, Masson-Goldner-Goto method and modified Hematoxylin-Eosin stain) and the silver impregnation methods (Luxol fast blue-Silver impregnation and Luxol fast blue-Silver impregnation-Periodic acid-Schiff-Hematoxylin).

    In the present study, we examined whether the effects induced by the bite-raised condition on glucocorticoid receptor (GR) expression differ between the dorsal and ventral hippocampus in SAMP8 mice. In the bite-raised condition, the number of GR-immunoreactive cells was significantly decreased in both the dorsal and ventral CA1 and dentate gyrus (DG) subfields of the hippocampus compared to control mice, as revealed by immunohistochemical analysis. The decrease in the number of GR-immunoreactive cells tended to be greater in the dorsal hippocampus than in the ventral hippocampus. Only in the DG subfield was there a significant difference in the number of GR-immunoreactive cells between the dorsal and ventral hippocampus. These findings suggest that in aged SAMP8 mice, the bite-raised condition decreases the number of GR-immunoreactive cells in both the dorsal and ventral hippocampus.
