    Lysosome reactions were ultrastructurally analyzed using a cell-free system with inside-out cell membrane vesicles (IOVs) prepared from rat erythrocyte ghosts in an alkaline buffer and with wheat germ agglutinin-coated colloidal gold particles (WGA-CGs). The submembranous surface coat in the ghosts was depleted from the IOVs’ outer surfaces. When lysosomes from rat liver were incubated with these IOVs, some of the trilaminar membranes of the lysosomes and IOVs came into close contact and formed a five-laminar structure without an intermembranous gap. In other reactions, the membranes of both structures formed one continuous trilaminar membrane along the margin of contact and ruffling five-laminar structures in other regions. Several lysosomes exhibited invaginating hollows or projections that entrapped or encircled the IOVs. Similar five-laminar structures were seen at a few points of contact between the IOVs and the hollowing or projecting membranes. In contrast, such reactions were much rarer when IOVs with reconstituted spectrins and actins on their outer surface were used. The formation of tubuliform pits with membrane-bound WGA-CGs was also observed after the incubation of lysosomes with WGA-CGs. These observations suggest that lysosomes fuse with cytoskeleton-depleted IOVs, wrap arm-like projections around them, enclose them by invagination or incorporate their membrane-bound macromolecules through the process of tubuliform invagination. Furthermore, the fusion and wrapping processes are not necessarily independent.

    We studied the function of TRPV4 expression and its neuronal activation in response to noxious stimulation of oral mucosa. The intermolar region of dorsal lingual eminence (IDLE) of rats was stimulated with 10 µl of either normal saline or 5% formalin. Immunohistological studies of the TRPV4, pERK and serotonin (5HT) expression in designated regions of tongues and brainstems were performed for studying the descending pain modulatory system in response to nociception. Specimens of the experimental IDLE demonstrated a significant increase of TRPV4 activity in particular in stratum basale of conical papillae (p < 0.01). pERK-IR positive neurons were significantly increased in the RMg (p < 0.05), Sp5C (p < 0.05) and Md (p < 0.01); TRPV4-IR neurons were found to show a similar distribution with pERK-IR cells in the peripheral Sp5C (p < 0.05). A significant increase of 5HT expression was observed in the RMg (p < 0.01), RPa (p < 0.01) and ROb (p < 0.05).
    The results suggest that TRPV4 in the oral mucosa is nociceptor of peripheral hyperalgesia, and pERK expression in the Sp5C is closely related with central hyperalgesia of the nociception. Furthermore, pERK-IR cells of the central 5HT nervous system are activated to accelerate 5HT release for neuronal modulation of the descending pain modulatory system in response to nociception.

    An incidence of a left superior vena cava with a left azygos vein was found in a cadaver during an Osaka Dental University student’s dissection practice session in 2002. The left superior vena cava began from the confluence between the right and left brachiocephalic veins, and extended directly into the left superior edge of the coronary sinus. No right superior vena cava was observed. The left azygos vein, receiving the bilateral intercostal veins, extended into the left superior vena cava. The developmental mechanism of the left superior vena cava was considered as follows; because the proximal part of the left anterior cardinal vein and the left common cardinal vein remained, and the proximal part of the right anterior cardinal vein and the right common cardinal vein degenerated and disappeared. The developmental mechanism of the left azygos vein was considered as follows; because the proximal part of the left posterior cardinal vein remained, and the root of the azygos vein was formed.

    The study goals were to demonstrate the superior laryngeal artery in detail with angiograms and to understand its vasculature three-dimensionally. Three fresh cadavers were totally injected with lead oxide-gelatin mixture. The larynx with the surrounding tissue was resected and radiographed stereoscopically with soft X ray system. We get informed consent from a person in question and the bereaved family. The superior laryngeal artery was divided into the ascending and descending branches. The ascending branch supplied the epiglottis chiefly from the ventral surface, and anastomosed with branches of the lingual artery. The descending branch supplied the vestibular and vocal folds, muscles of the larynx and mucosa over the muscles, and anastomosed with distal branches of the superior thyroid artery. Stereographic angiograms and macroscopic observation enabled us to understand vasculature of the superior laryngeal artery.

    The aim of this study was to investigate the influences of shovel-shaped incisors on the dental arch crowding in the samples of modern young female adult Mongolians (belonging to the Khalkha-Mogol grouping) ranged between 18.5 and 25.0 years, with a mean age of 20.7 years. Materials in this study comprised of 33 dental casts. Plaster replicas of the A.S.U. system plaques were used to facilitate standardization in scoring and classify shoveling regarding both upper central and lateral incisors. Dimensions of the dental arch namely, overjet, overbite, arch depth, arch width and irregularity index were measured. The correlation between the shovel shape of the central incisor and the lateral incisor was highly significant. Significantly relations were found between the grades of shoveling and the mesiodistal diameters of upper first molars and lower incisors. Positive correlation was admitted between the shoveling and upper arch depth anterior, and upper arch depth. It may be considered that the grades of shoveling are indirectly related with upper and/or lower anterior crowding. Although crowding is looks like an expression of disharmony between teeth and alveolar arch, it may be caused by multiple etiologic factors interacted directly and/or indirectly.
