Enpynase, a brand of proteolytic enzyme, has been administered 3 capsules daily to 30 patients with paranasal sinusitis.
In 17 patients, the drug was given concomitantly with local therapy such as nebulization and maxillary sinus puncture. While 13 patients have been treated with the drug postoperatively because of increased nasal discharge.
As regards to theraputic effect, marked improvement of symptoms obtained in 10 patients of the former group (58.8%) and in 8 of the latter (61.6%).
Generally, initial evidence of amelioration of the symptoms was noted within about 1 to 2 weeks after the administration.
Inprovement of subjective complaints, mainly headache was recognized more frequently than objective improvement of the clinical pictures.
It has been considered that Empynase was clinically effective against paranasal sinusitis, especially if it has been given to them in combination with conventional local treatments or sinus operation. Further observation on more cases will be necessary to evaluate the entity of this agent.
No significant side-effect was observed in the all cases.
