    Single crystals of zinc selenide are prepared by the sublimation method. Crystals grown at about 950°C are needle-like or rod-shaped with the growing direction of [111]. Blocks and plates are obtained in a region of 1000_??_1200°C. The growth surface of plate-shaped crystals are (111) plane on which triangular growth patterns are found in many cases.
    Some of ZnSe crystals have sub-peaks in spectral response of photoconductivity near the main peak (_??_475 mμ), one is at 485 mμ and the other is at 542 mμ. These sub-peaks are probably related to imperfections of crystals. Photocurrent-light intensity characteristics of ZnSe crystals are different from those of CdS or CdSe crystals.
    From the measurements of thermally stimulated current and temperature quenching of photo-current, ZnSe crystal is found to have two electron trapping levels (about 0.28 eV and 0.30 eV from the bottom of the conduction band) and a hole trapping level (about 1.0 eV above the top of the valence band).

    This paper deals with the electric potential of human body measured by varying the kind of frictionable materials on which and with which one walks (carpets and foot-wear) and the manner and duration of walking in room air of 23°_??_25°C and 45_??_55% R. H. Any combination of the above factors gives the potential change approximately in the form vbw{1-exp(-tbw)}. The saturation potential vbw up to 3 kV is related linearly with the time constant τbw as
    vbw=[vbw](1-τbw/[τbw]),
    where [vbw] and [τbw] are constants.
    Depending upon the rubbing being hard or light, the coordinate system seems to be ([vbw], 0) or (0, [τbw]). This phenomenon can be explained in terms of an equivalent circuit consisting of the internal resistance R that participates in the phenomenon and the load impedance R"C calculated from electric constants of the materials. From this equivalent circuit, [vbw] and [τbw] are obtained as _??_vbw and _??_τbw, respectively. Anti-static treatments such as application of surfactants and blending with rayon on carpet and conductive foot-wear are effective in lowering [vbw].
    The maximum potential of our body of 3 kV by walking with highly insulated foot-wear, the full capacity of the body of 90 pF in standing on one leg and the rubbing area of 150cm2 give the charge density of 5.4esu/cm2 which is of the order of corona density of 8.4esu/cm2 on a parallel-plate condenser, suggesting that the corona discharge between carpet and foot-wear is responsible for such high density of charge in our body. When we reflect upon the fact that, for a highly insulated human. body of the capacity of 110 pF in standing on both legs to experience electric shock on the finger tip, body potential of at least 5 kV is needed, there. will be no such danger provided the room air temper-ature and humidity are not lower than the values used in this experiment. If otherwise, any foot-wear such as leather-soled shoes may conduct the generated charge to raise the body potential above the danger mark.

    Normal gradient of air velocity, the wind profile, over various plane surfaces differing in rough-ness is measured on sand-paper, gauze, stylofoam and tracing paper with a microthermistor-anemometer. The sample, 30×50cm2 in size, is moved on rail at varied velocities through the still room-air. The height of diffusion layer of air-the layer free from turbulence-over the surface is theoretically estimated and experimentally determined with the sort of roughness and air velocity as parameters. The height obtained by experiment is within a few mm for the air velocity up to a few m/s, becoming very small as the velocity increases, and the rate, normal to the flow, of transfer of air momentum is calculated from the obtained result. From Reynolds and roughness Reynolds numbers and derived values of the concerned parameters, the generation of turbulence is demonstrated. As a corollary to the problem, the relation between the drag coefficient and equivalent sand roughness is dealt with.

    Green electroluminescence emission is observed on some ZnSe single crystals prepared by the sublimation method. Studies are made on the electroluminescence under microscope, on emission spectra, wave form of the emission and dependence of the electroluminescence on the current flow. A close correlation was found between the electroluminescence and rectification properties of the crystal. From experimental results, the electroluminescence is concluded to be caused by acceler-ated electrons exciting the emission centers while passing through small and localized npn junctions in regions which are considered to be of p type. When the applied voltage is high, a glow-like emission is observed, which suggests the breakdown of some of npn junctions.

    A method is developed whereby electrical conductivity, dielectric constant and electromotive force of semiconducting and dielectric materials can be measured without contacting electrodes. The principle of this method is that the torque on a specimen exerted by a linearly polarized field is pro-portional to its dielectric constant and this torque exerted by a rotating electrical field is proportional to its conductivity or the imaginal part of its dielectric constant. When the conductivity of specimen is very low, less than 10-12 Ω-1 cm-1, the above metioned torque exerted by a rotating field becomes very small. The torque exerted by an electrostatic field, however, is large enough to measure; it varies exponentially with time by charge transfer. This time rate of torque variation makes very small values of conductivity measurable. The electromotive force in specimen is obtained from the torque caused by the resultant polarization due to emf and external d.c. field.

    Internal friction of cold-worked α-iron containing a small amount of nitrogen is measured with a torsion pendulum and the dislocation damping introduced by deformation is observed. The height of this damping decreases during aging at room temperature; it is lower when the nitrogen content is higher.
    The dislocation density Λ and the number of nitrogen atoms nt that segregated to dislocations during the aging time t are calculated from the measurement of the decrease of Snoek peak height. If we put nt=nτ when the dislocation damping completely vanished, the average loop length of dislocations between pinning points will be given by Λ/nτ. The numerical values of Λ/nτ, obtained from experimental results is about 3×10-8cm.
    The dislocation damping consists of strain amplitude dependent and independent components. The former vanishes in the earlier stage of pinning of dislocations, which is explainable on the basis of Granato-Lücke theory, and the latter survives until the average loop length of dislocations becomes of the order of atomic spacing. The mechanism of the amplitude independent damping is not clear.
