The demand of people on health and welfare has been increasing year by year, however the supply of medical resources has not been satisfied.
The gap of demand and supply in medical fields will be enlarged in future and the problem is seriously understood not only in developed countries but also in developing countries.
Many nations struggled to find appropriate solutions and one of keys tosolve this pro. blem is considered to utilize biomedical engineering.
The Japanese government also recognized the importance of biomedical engineering in future society of Japan, and promoted several kinds of projects on biomedical engineering.
In these background, the research and development on biomedical engineering has been remarkably progressed in recent years. And modern medicine hasbeen revolutionally impacted not only in the fields of fundamental researches but also in those of clinical diagnosis and therapeutics.
In fifteen years ago, in 1964, the Japanese Society of Medical Electronics and Biological Engineering was organized and now the members are counted over 4, 000.
The current trends in the research and development in biomedical engineering are pointed out as following. Miniaturization, implantation, automation, remote telemetering, noninvassive method, application of new technologies, intergration and systematization etc.
