In order for automobiles to be developed as a means of transportation that continues to provide the convenience of mobility in the future, it is important to minimize their negative effects on the environment, traffic accidents, and traffic congestion. With the aim of achieving an affluent mobile society, Toyota has long contended that this social task is extremely important and has been actively involved in addressing it.
With regard to environment, Toyota has been actively developing hybrid technology that is considered a core technology for the solution of three major issues: 1) improving fuel efficiency in order to reduce CO2 emissions, 2) developing exhaust emissions abatement systems to minimize atmospheric pollution, and 3) pursuing energy diversification.
In terms of safety, Toyota's vehicle development aims to provide optimal driving support based on driving conditions, not only by integrating individual safety technologies and systems in the vehicle, but also by adopting an infrastructure-respondent system. By increasing such integration in the future, Toyota seeks to reduce dangers related to vehicle use as we pursue vehicles that do not cause accidents.
Nanotechnologies have shown great potential and are expected to produce the breakthrough technologies that will yield innovative solutions to the above issues surrounding automotive transportation.

Slurry spreading type gas diffusion electrode for integrated fuel cell was proposed. By using this new type gas diffusion electrode, thickness of electrode can be controlled and it can be fabricated into various shapes of substrate. By utilizing this property, the resistance of MEA can be reduced and hence high MEA performance can be achieved. Furthermore this gas diffusion electrode needs only low temperature (80-150C) heat treatment and therefore the MEA fabricated can be manufactured at a low cost.

As a wide band gap (3.37 eV) semiconductor oxide with a large excitation binding energy (60 meV), zinc oxide becomes one of the most important functional materials with unique properties.
In our group, a facile novel approach to synthesize the hexagonal zinc oxide micro tubes is demonstrated at low temperature. This synthesis introduces ammonia water into zinc chloride aqueous solution, which enables the generation of tubular ZnO at large-scale, low cost and simple equipments. The morphology of products could be controlled by adjusting the synthesis conditions. Growth mechanism and characterization of ZnO micro tubes will be reported in this paper.

After ball-milling the commercial K2Ti4O9 at 700 rpm for 2 h, the obtained fine powders were dispersed in a 5 M HCl solution to destruct the layered sheet, and then the solution pH was adjusted to 0 with NH3 aqueous solution. A microwave-assisted hydrothermal treatment was employed to prepare TiO2 from the precursor solution. It is found that by controlling the reaction conditions, TiO2 with different crystalling phases could be synthesized, and most of the prepared samples showed high specific surface areas. The prepared TiO2 showed excellent activity in photo-destruction of NO gas.

Novel superstructures of zinc oxide thin film with nano-screws superstructures were prepared via soft solution route without any polymer additives. The thin film of ZnO could be produced directly on the substrates. The zinc oxide thin film with nano-screws superstructures was composed with visible-light induced nitrogen doped titania nano-particles successfully. The ZnO nano-screws/TiO2-xNy composite film showed excellent photocatalytic deNOx ability and quantum efficient.

Eu
3+-doped TiO
2 nanoparticles were synthesized by Ar/O
2 induction thermal plasma pyrolysis of aqueous solutions containing titanium(III) trichloride and europium(III) nitrate. The presence of chlorines caused to increase rutile content and decrease the solubility of Eu
3+ into TiO
2 lattice. The synthesized powders containing chlorine exhibited sharp emission at 617 nm. The luminescent intensity was lower than that of the powders synthesized without chlorine.

Adhesion mechanism between oxide ceramics (bixbyte structure) and epoxy molding compounds was discussed by analyzing electronic states of water molecules adsorbed on the ceramic surfaces using first principles pseudo-potential method. The material dependence on the driving force of ionization of the adsorbed water was good agreement with the actual adhesion phenomenon.

Water-repellent inorganic-organic hybrid films have been prepared from mixtures of polymerized tetraethoxysilane, silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and fluoroalkylsilane (FAS). The resultant films showed excellent water-repellency and water-slip ability. The durability of the film was improved by the increase in the number of silanol groups at the end of PDMS and the addition of FAS. The resulting silica-PDMS-FAS films showed good practical durability and have been come to practical use of water-repellent windshields for automobiles.
