Academic studies on philosophy in modern Japan have been mainly institutionalized as those of interpretation of European philosophers. I believe, however, contemporary philosophers have to put an great importance on actual actions of themselves in this society, instead of mere interpretations, in order to face seriously today's philosophical issues on the global scale.

In this paper I try to clarify why Masao Maruyama failed to appreciate the importance of the thoughts of Jien and Kumazawa Banzan. Jien wrote a masterpiece of philosophy of history, Gukansyo, and Banzan's works contain a unique theory of environmental civil engineering. While Maruyama takes a kind of universal stance that has lost sight of contemporary environmental landscapes, Jien and Banzan constructed their theories from their consciousness of their locality and their own language. I call this consciousness the attitude of domestication. I propose a thesis that in the time of environmental crisis we must construct theories of values by criticizing the contemporary situations from the stance of domestication suggested by Jien and Banzan.

In this paper I discuss the role of reason exhibited in practical reasoning. But there are two types of interpretation of the most successful modern adaptations of Aristotelian practical reasoning, i. e. ends-means type and rule-case one. But both of them are inadequate interpretations for Aristotle's original insight. I illuminate the inadequacy by indicating their Humean and Kantian background respectively. I also mention the turning point of rationality within the Stoic tradition which could be traced down to Hobbes' thought. And finally I explore an idea that the later emergence of the notion of the will has fatally affected modern conceptions of rationality which has happened coincidentally with fadeout of the practical wisdom from modern philosophical arena.

Required that moral should be justified, one could say this consists in its being rational. In contemporary moral philosophy, however, two fundamentally different conceptions of rationality prevail : one is that of “moral realism” advocated by J. McDowell and others, and the other is that of “non-cognitivism” or “projectivism.” Between these two theories lies, I think, the difference in the view of morality. For the former morality is a practice in itself, and that as such as to make life meaningful; for the latter it is something that (as a means) regulates practices (in social relations) so as to make life well.

In Plato's
Gorgias, Socrates refuted his interlocutor Callicles. But they were not just contrary. They argued about the question, how to live and which human's life is better, to pursue one's own pleasure (the Natural-Low) or to pursue wisdom (philosophy). Then, thorough the cross-examine (elenchus), they reached a conclusion as a truth there was a wisdom by which person became good. It is important that the concept of the wisdom also belonged to Callicles's system of belief, even though he did not agree with it. This attitude of Callicles shows that he is inconsistency with himself as Socrates predicted.

Plato distinguishes two uses of “is” in the
Sophist 255c-d (
kath' hauto, pros allo). This distinction is closely related to the “is” used in the two methods of Dialectic, i. e., the Collection and the Division. As for the Collection,
“einai mian en hapasi” is used
kath' hauto, and as for the Division,
“einai syngenes” is used
pros allo. For, the latter is used in the scene of relation of one thing to another, but the former is not used in such a context. Besides, it is important for us to pay attention to the fact that these two methods are the two aspects of the same method, i. e., Dialectic. So, we can conclude that the distinction is the distinction between the two modes of understanding (relation and non-relation) about the same “is” in the scene of the use of ordinary language.

The Stoic notion of “katorthoma” (right action) have been understood as “kathekon (appropriate action) done from the virtue”. This understanding seems to me at least misleading, though not wrong. This article tries a different approach. In a testimony katorthoma is defined as “legitimate action”. And Stoics understand a law as “commandment of what to be done”. So katorthoma can be interpreted as “action following commandment”. Then, several texts testify the comandment concerning katorthoma to be conceived as “comandment with reservation” or “conditional commandment”. Now, through the stoic theory of action based on self-comandments and solving a few problems, we must clarify the notion of katorthoma.

In his
Grammar of Assent, John Henry Newman makes a new philosophical approach to the problem of the rationality of faith. Against the traditional empiricist epistemology, he introduces a brand-new concept of the certainty or knowledge which constitutes the basis of our belief system. Those basic beliefs which Newman calls “certitudes” are converging results from a cumulation of probabilities. They are personal as well as practical, but never arbitrary. He lays the foundation for his concept of personal certainty on his “illative sense”, which he has learned from Aristotle's practical knowledge,
phronesis. Newman points out that there is no code or science in concrete matters of our life.

It is widely held that platonism, as a philosophy of mathematics, leaves manifold applications of mathematics unintelligible. According this doctorine, mathematics is to be regarded sa the description of a realm of objective, self-subsistent mathematical objects that are atemporal. If so, why the description of a super-empirical realm of abstract objects can be applied to the empirical realm that we inhabit? Among modern philosophers of mathematics Frege is a representative of platonism. However, this paper shows that it is uses of numbers which lead Frege's number theory. I conclude that Frege's version of platonism is immune to this sort of objection.

Among methods for representing our belief states and belief changes,
Bayesianism is one of the most popular methods. Bayesianism has two features :
1. Our rational belief states can be represented by
probability functions.
2. Our rational belief changes can be represented by the
conditionalization of probability functions.
We can derive conditionalization from the more general principle. It is the
Principle of Minimum Relative Information (PMRI). Van Fraassen shows that PMRI is inadequate as a method of rational belief changes because it doesn't give a rational solution to
JB problem. On the contrary to his argument, I will prove that PMRI can give a rational solution to JB problem.
