In this age of globalization and borderless world, it is scarcely significant to talk about the potential of modern Japanese philosophy. The problem how to express oneself concerning philosophical issues in Japanese is only local. Since the rise of chauvinistic fundamentalism of Kokugaku-school in 18 th century, Japanese literature has suffered from the predominance of Yamato-kotoba (originally Japanese words). On the other hand, in the texts of philosophy, many Kango (Chinese words and idioms) were used and even abused in sometimes very arbitrary modifications. The breakthrough amid this bipolar situation will find the way to the open field of world-philosophy.

In this article, Peter Singer's animal liberation and criticism agaist it is discussed. Singer's animal liberation is based on the principle of equal consideration of interests. However, the basis for this principle is derived from the logical requirement of universalizability of moral judgment. Thus, on the part of people who deny any consideration of animal interests or who think animal interests weigh less than those of humans, there is a responsibility to prove the validity of their views. Though some think animal interests are not the immediate object of moral consideration, they in fact are. Those who feel that more consideration should be placed on human interests compared to animals, in order to justify this inequality, point out the relevant moral differences between the two such as rationality, autonomy, moral agency, and so on. These people must come face to face with the so called, the problem of "marginal cases" in which it is stated that the interests of people lacking these qualities or capacities need not be considered. Though many solutions have been proposed, not one has been satisfactory. Thus, Singer's view that it is an unjustifiable discrimination not to consider animal interests as strongly just because they are for animals, can be indeed labeled as "speciesism." However, there are views stating that no interests worthy of consideration exist for animals because they do not have any sense of self and not even any consciousness. This problem can not be simply solved by physiology or cognitive ethology. Since it contains philosophical aspects such as "what is consciousness"or"what is belief, " its resolution is not at all easy. Though the principle of equal consideration of interests has sufficient ground, there still is room for debate on whether animals possess any interests to be considered. Therefore, animal liberation calls for discussion as well.

Spinoza's system, startling indeed with its strange appearance-Deus seu Natura, or God as the immanent cause of everything-, will be made more understandable if we consider it as a systematic attempt of nailing down a necessitarian concept of truth and existence. I shall examine his denial of contingent truth in the Tractatus intellectus emendatione which is closely related to Cartesian idea of certainty, and show how it brings Spinoza to the concept of the omne esse, the whole Being, where truth, existence and actuality are all flattened out into one reality sub specie aeternitatis. After reconstructing from a modal point of view the theory of human knowledge in the Ethica, I shall briefly discuss a strong notion of actuality Spinozan idea of necessity might convey, together with its ethical import.

According to Spinoza, the human mind is the idea, or knowledge of the human body. As the body is in the causal connection of the universe and is changing every moment, so is wavering the mind. The Affects occur in this state and form our usual condition. How was Spinoza considering the way to the firm preservation of oneself in this "flux"?
Although Spinoza in Ethics declares that he will consider the affects as natural things, he has treated them as born of the knowledge in his earlier work, Short Treatise on God, Man, and His Well-Being where the treatment of the affects is under the conspicuous influence of Descartes' Passions of the Soul. In consequence, the restraint of affects worked out in Short Treatise turns out, I think, insufficient.
However, in this treatise, Spinoza represents remarkable investigations into our knowledge about the inside and the outside which does not appear clearly in his mature work, Ethics. He uses the terms exemplar humanae naturae (a model of human nature) only in a single passage of Ethics. This passage appears inconsistent with his criticism of the universals and of the final cause and has caused the embarrassment among interpreters. We will receive this exemplar as it is, and understand it in the context of Short Treatise. As conclusion we intend to make clear the signification of Spinoza's investigation into the problem about the inside and the outside as his original philosophy.

Practical reasoning is deliberation about what to do. In order to figure out the best thing for her to do, the agent weighs both the reasons for and against a particular course of action and finally forms the judgment: "All things considered, I should do x". In cases of akrasia, however, the agent curiously fails to abide by this best judgment. She freely and intentionally does something that she knows well, at the time of action, to be worse than the best alternative. What is the meaning of this irrational, self-destructive action? How can it be even possible?
The chief aim of this paper is to explain how we can act freely against our best judgment, but this task will also lead us to see the significance of akrasia for the contemporary philosophy of action. The significance of akrasia, I shall argue, lies in the fact that it reveals the other crucial determinants of our actions than practical reasoning, the importance of which has not yet been fully recognized and emphasized in the philosophy of action.

In later medieval philosophy, divine power is often divided into potentia Dei absoluta (divine absolute power) and potentia Dei ordinata (divine ordained power). Does divine absolute power include the ability to sin? According to the traditional interpretation of this power distinction, which is found in Thomas Aquinas, God cannot sin even by divine absolute power. But this claim requires more explanation.
In the philosophical theology of Thomas Aquinas, divine absolute power has a duality. First, divine absolute power means the possibility of establishing other orders in the world. Secondly, it means the divine actuality which is perfectly indifferent to the world. In the latter sense, divine power is considered in itself independently of divine will. God's impeccability is often explained by reference to divine will. But, as long as divine absolute power in the second sense means divine goodness as divine substance, God's impeccability can also be explained by reference to divine power itself, without reference to divine will. Divine goodness doesn't set limits to divine power. If anything, in God's relations with the world, it is divine goodness which is restricted.

In this paper I defend moral realism by considering Wittgenstein's remarks on rule-following in his Philosophical Investigations. Due to the lack of any positive theory in Wittgenstein's text, this argument is supplemented by my reconstruction of Wittgenstein's theory of aspect in Part II of Investigations. In trying to answer the "paradox" of rule-following made famous by Kripke, I will show that, in the spirit of direct realism, an aspect of normativity, if it the has proper surroundings (Umgebung), is a fact of normativity, which rules that the subject ought to do such and such.
This basic thesis is coupled with the (Sellars-McDowell's) idea of the space of reasons, which is also joined with the idea of fact causation. As a result, we can think that moral facts or facts of normativity do have causal efficacy, as long as they are reasons for action. This theory is, therefore, naturalistic as well as rationalistic, although this "naturalism" is in the sense of second nature a la McDowell. The notion of aspect itself will also be given a naturalistic interpretation analogous to the Gibsonian conception of information.
The paper will proceed more like drawing a (better, alternative) picture, than giving a set of arguments, because of the nature of the topic.

In De Veritate, Thomas mentions the "habitual self-cognition" along with the "actual self-cognition". However, he does not deal with the "habitual self-cognition" in Summa Theologiae any more. How should we interpret this change?
He insists in Summa Theologiae that everything is known through its act, and not through its potentiality. As a habit fails in being a perfect act, it is also insufficient to be knowable. Therefore, "habitual self-cognition" can not be called a "self-cognition" in a strict sense, but it should be called a "self-knowledge".
Moreover, Thomas says that a habit is present in our intellect, not as its "object", but as its "form". Thus, in Summa Theologiae, the "habitual self-cognition" lost its place as a "cognition", but plays a role of its "form".
Along with these affirmations, Thomas states that there are two kinds of self-cognition, a particular one and a universal one. In the former case, the mere "presence of the mind" suffices, since the "habitual self-knowledge" plays a role of its "form"; one knows itself reflexively. In the latter case, one knows itself understanding through the act of cognition of other being, so that its possible intellect can be activated by its "species". Thus, one has to examine its nature carefully in order to determine what one should be, and even to "the image of God" in the light of the divine Truth.
When we return to ourselves through the self-cognition, and reach the "Existence Itself" as a principle of intelligibility, we will find out what we should be, as participants of this "Existence". Hence, Thomas re-organized the frame of "self-cognition" in the manner of act, and re-defined more clearly the nature of man and the image of God in Summa Theologiae.

What new possibilities of communication are contained in Derridean deconstruction, which so severely dismisses the theory of communication as we have known it, especially from Habermas and Apel? Is there really any "serious" approach to the notion of communication for such a thought that radically calls into question the idealization and theorization of communication? The aim of this study is to examine and recast Derrida's critique of the theory of communication by incorporating the following insights: (1) Derrida's argument is based upon his own discovery of the necessity of what could be called "telecommunication"; (2) it is constitutive of an immanent criticism in that it disputes the idealizing assumptions of communication (the ideas of univocality, transparency, publicity, etc.) not from an empiricist standpoint (which clings to a diversity of everyday realities in communication) but from the very logic which makes possible the idealization of communication; (3) these arguments set out the precondition for communication to take place as event in a strict sense, and it is from this point of departure that one can search for the "minimal consensus." By taking these steps, this study attempts to characterize Derrida's thought of language as the "logic of telecommunication."
