    Some problems in disposal of the photographic processing wastes were reviewed. After describing the indication of water pollution and several laws limiting the industrial wastes for the cleaner environment, the specific problems in disposing the photographic processing solutions were pointed out.
    Regeneration of color developer by removing bromide with ion ion-exchange method and with electrodialysis using ion-exchange membranes, regeneration of spent photographic fixing bath with electrolytic method and ion-exchange method, regeneration of ferricyanide bleach by persulfate-oxidation and ozone-oxidation, and the method of reverse osmosis of the washing water to collect the salt and to reuse the separated water, were generally remarked.

    Electric conductivity of thiocyanate, thiosulfate, and sulfate in the presence of gelatin and of polyvinyl alcohol and that of the salt solutions neither containing gelatin nor polyvinyl alcohol was measured.
    Amount of adsorption was calculated from the observed values.
    The adsorption of thiocyanate salt on gelatin increased in the order, KSCN>NH4SCN, NaSCN<LiSCN < Mg (SCN) 2<Al (SCN) 3 and that of the salts on polyvinyl alcohol did in the order KSCN, NaSCN<NH4SCN<LiSCN<Mg (SCN) 2 < Al (SCN) 3.
    The order of adsorption of sulfate ion in the case of gelatin was (NH4) 2SO4<Na2SO4<MgSO4, AlK (SO4) 2, MgSO4.
    The adsorption of thiocyanate ion was small in the case of the salt which had a short clearing time and had a large ionic mobility. The orders of adsorption on polyvinyl alcohol and on gelatin were nearly equall. In the case of sulfate, aluminum ion was most adsorbed on gelatin, and magnesium ion was adsorbed on polyvinyl alcohol greatly.
    In the case of the 3% gelatin solution and 3% polyvinyl alcohol one, the amount of adsorbed ammonium thiosulfate was larger than that of ammonium thiocyanate.

    Relation between photographic effects and oxidation potentials of addenda has been examined. The addenda examined in this paper and the order of their oxidation potentials at about pH 7 are: resorcin>hydroquinone, catechol (-0.5 V vs. SCE)>o-phenylenediamine (-0.3 V vs. SCE). o-Phenylenediamine caused fog formation, and sensitization or desensitization depending upon its added amounts. Catechol and hydroquinone caused desensitization. Resorcin did not show any photographic effect. Based on the oxidation potentials and other photographic effects of the addenda, the following mechanism has been suggested: o-phenylenediamine caused silver speck formation, which could be the sensitivity centers or fog centers, by reducing silver ions. Catechol and hydroquinone added were in part oxidized in emulsions, forming their oxidized products, which depressed the development process.

    Infrared (IR) absorption measurements have been carried out with gelatin films containing watersoluble silver salts at high concentrations to detect interactions between the silver ion and the peptide group. The principal effect of silver ion on the IR spectrum of gelatin was to shift the amide I band (carbonyl stretching) toward smaller wavenumbers. The effect was maximum when the number of silver ions was about one half that of peptide groups. These results suggest that silver ions in gelatin formed weak C=O...Ag+...O=C-type bonds with peptide carbonyl groups. Silver salts added in excess tended to separate from gelatin. A similar effect was observed with a model substance Nmethylacetamide (MAA), which itself formed a crystalline adduct with silver nitrate at a molar ratio of 2: 1.
