    For the titled purpose from practical viewpoint, DQE was resolved into two factors, primary quantum efficiency F and noise figure p;
    DQE=F/p2
    where p represents the extent of noise increase within the system, and F is the rate of photon use.
    By plotting the maximum DQE values of various systems of a F-1/p2 plane, characteristics of chemical and physical imaging systems has been distinctively depicted; while the former are associated with low values of F except AgX, most of the latter suffer from low values of 1/p2 due to noises involved in the permanent image formation.
    Physical systems, which are based on reversible photo response, can further be classified by the permanence of the image recorded.
    Comparison of the vidicon and electrophotography disclosed an intrinsic conflict involved in the tone reproduction by the latter. This conflict arises from the combination of the linear photoconductive response with the image reconstruction by light absorption.

    Trivalent cobalt complex compounds, [Co (NH3) 6] X3, (X-=CF3COO-, H (CF2) 6COO-, H (CF2) 10COO-) were synthesized and the electron beam recording material (EB material) was madewith a Co (III) complex compound and 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol. Printout image was observed on the EB material which was exposed to 15 KeV electrons. Printout image was amplified to form dense image by heat development. Exposure characteristics of the EB materials were measured as a function of following parameters; accelerated electron voltage, cobalt complex concentration, a anion of cobalt complex compound, heating time, etc. The anion of the cobalt complex, H (CF2) 6COO- accelerates the rate of heat development.
    The mechanisms of the latent image formation of the EB material, and of the heat development were proposed.

    In order to make a novel lithographic plate which can be used without any processing before printing, two types of the plate were tried to make by coating organosulfur compounds and hydroxyetyl cellulose (HEC) as the double layers of each component or by coating their mixture as the mono layer on the copper plate. When the plates were exposed to light, the copper surface became hydrophilic by the action of HEC to copper surface in both cases.
    The exposure process was sensitized with the photocompounds which generate free radicals photochemically (CBr4, tribromomethylphenyl sulfon) or electron acceptor (2, 5-dichloro-p-benzoquinone, 2, 4, 7-trinitrofluorenone).
    These lithographic plates could be expected for a positive type non-processing PS plate. On the other hand, when organosulfur compound was mixed with alginic acid by replacing HEC, the plate became a negative type because photocrosslinking occured in the alginic acid.

    In order to discover new radiation-sensitive nonsilver halide materials, the coloration based on the formation of Stenhouse salts was studied in the following three systems:(a) furfural -amine/HCl aq/methanol solution, (b) furfural-amine/polyhalogenide/PMMA matrix, (c) furfural-amine/PVC matrix.
    Firstly, forty-five aromatic amines were surveyed to find out the amines suitable for the color precursors (reactant from furfural and amine) in the system (a). As a result, the five amines, which gave the precursors in good yields by the reaction with furfural, were selected: m-nitroaniline, N-methylaniline, m-methyl-N-methylaniline, aniline, and o-methoxyaniline. Secondly, the coloration induced by electron beam bombardment was studied in the systems (b) and (c) containing the color pre-cursors (the reactants from these amines and furfural). Although the PMMA films containing the color precursors and polyhalogenides were sensitive to electron beam, they were not stable when standing under daylight at room temperature.
    The PVC films containing the color precursors were very stable and colored to reddish yellow (λmax 498-545 nm) by electron beam bombardment. The PVC film containing N-methylaniline-furfural was the most sensitive and the increase in absorbance at 498 nm was 0.78 by electron beam bombardment of 60 kV-7.5×10-7 C/cm2. A good linear relationship existed between the degree of coloration and the amounts of electron beam bombardment in the range from 0 to 10-6 C/cm2.

    Photothermographic properties of several metal oxalates and complex oxalates were studied by measuring the reflection density of irradiated and then heated plates on which studied materials were coated. Potassium dioxalatocuprate (II) and oxalatodiaminopalladium (II) were newly found to be photothermographic.
    Oxalatodiaminopalladium (II) is photosensitive at 300 to 400 nm. Evolution of ammonia gas from this complex was detected while it photodecomposed. It is assumed that photolysis and thermal decomposition of the complex proceeds as follows:
    Pd (NH3) 2C2O4→Pd+2NH3+2CO2
    Ferric oxalate is sensitive to the light at 250 to 500 nm. This salt is sensitive to both light and heat, but shows no photothermographic property.
    From these results it is suggested that the palladium (II) complex is applicable for image forming.
