Many studies have been done on masking process to get good color reproduction of printing with traditional photographic method and Scanner-Analog computer systems. However, little has been done so far on digital masking process.
In this paper, a fundamental method of digital masking is introduced. A digital image scanning and exposing system called Photomation P1700 is applied to digital masking.
Experimental results of color correction used masking equation and tone correction with gray scale transformation are shown.

Tone correction of picture is commonly performed by using the transformation of photographic characteristic curve known as gamma correction. However, this method is not always possible because the photographic characteristic curve will not be obtained if the gray scale is not recorded in the picture.
In this paper, a new method for correcting tone of picture is introduced. This method is based on the modification of the cumulative distribution function obtained from the density histogram of picture instead of using the photographic characteristic curve.
Relations between the cumulative distribution function and the photographic characteristic curve are analyzed and experimental results of tone correction are shown.

Dapples obstructing the observation have often appeared in electron microscopic images of the particles, and the appearance is especially remarkable in those of spherical particles.
For investigating the origin of the dapples, the detail of particles was observed by using specimens obtained from developed silver bleaching and those without carbon evapolating, and normal specimens were observed in transverse direction.
From such experiments it has been made clear that the dapples are due to the terrace of spherical crystals and to the partial lack of evaporated carbon on the crystal particles.

Simulations on the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of black-and-white negative film are achieved by using two mathematical models. The mathematical models which used in this study express the photographic characteristic curve, and the relationship between density and corresponding root-meansquare granularity.
In spite of simple models, this study showed approximately identical results for studies by Shaw who used theoretical models based on the Poisson statistics. Calculating DQE by using the mathematical models is considered to be valuable in practice.
