The first part of this paper describes the fundamental electrochemistry required for understanding the “Electrode Model” on the mechanism of development;
(1) electrochemical reaction
(2) electrochemical equilibrium (Gibbs-Thomson equation)
(3) electrochemical kinetics (charge-transfer and diffusion).
The main part of this paper is a rather critical review of the current electrode model on the mechanism of development.
As compared with correct studies on electrochemical equilibrium of latent images, those on kinetics of development may not be fully appropriate from electrochemical aspects.ΔE in the Butler-Volmer equation often erroneously incorporates the difference between the equilibrium potential of Ag
+/Ag and the equilibrium potential of oxidant/reductant of the developer because of confusion of equilibrium and kinetics. Based on these considerations, a modified equation on charge-transfer is proposed. The paper also considers some important factors relating to kinetics.
