    An introductory review is made of recent papers dealing with the ionic equilibria, crystal and molecular structures, electronic states, and adsorption of heterocyclic compounds for photographic antifoggants and stabilizers. Simple mass action equations for the acid dissociation and the silver salt formation of these compounds hold only under a very restricted experimental conditions, since they are apt to form various complexes. Single crystal X-ray structure analysis has revealed the existence of silver-nitrogen bonds in the silver salts of nonsulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds, whereas the results of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy suggest the formation of silver-sulfur bonds in the silver salts of sulfur-containing ones. The heats of adsorption of the latter to silver sulfide are larger than those of the former, and are comparable to the heats of precipitation of sparingly soluble silver salts from aqueous solutions.

    Poly (methyl vinyl ketone) (PMVK) was easily degraded via Norrish Type II reaction by ultraviolet irradiation. Copolymers of MVK with Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) or Styrene (St) have high values in quantum yield of main-chain scission. Therefore, much study has been given to the fine image formation with the copolymers by Deep UV light irradiation. Both copolymers in radical polymerization were limited in the range of 50% for yield to control molecular structure. Photodegradation of the copolymers was measurd by the viscometry. Maximum values of the photodegrading speed were obtained for MVK unit 30 mol % in the copolymer with MMA, and for MVK unit 50 mol % in the copolymer with St, respectively.
    The photodegradation of the both copolymers have been considered to proceed via main-chain scission by Norrish Type II reaction. The fact was confirmed by measuring IR & UV spectra of the copolymer films which was irradiated with Deep UV light in vacuum and air.
    Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) is one of the positive working resists which exhibits the high resolution for Deep UV exposure but its low sensitivity (ca. 500 mJ/cm2) makes the practical use difficult. However, sensitivity of P (MMA-co-MVK)-30, which is MMA copolymer containig 30 mol % MVK unit, is 240 mJ/cm2, and then P (St-co-MVK)-37, which is St copolymer containing 37 mol % MVK unit, has high sensitivity of 5-13 mJ/cm2. P (St-co-MVK)-37 resist coated on a silicon wafer to 0.4μm thickness resolved 0.5 μm line & space patterns.
    It was concluded that the photodegradation for St copolymer takes advantage of the well known Norrish Type II reaction, and of the energy migration from St unit to carbonyl group. The high sensitivity is also attributed to St-MVK-St sequence. Moreover, studies of Deep UV resist with MVK copolymers are presented.

    The intensification of magneto-optic image formed on 82% Ni-Fe alloy thin film was studied applying double layer evaporation technique. The difference of image luminance caused by magneto-optic effect (longitudinal Faraday effect) was indicated as density difference using photographic characteristic curve, and any possible error due to the optical flare was calibrated.
    It was found that the density difference ΔDd of the image for various thickness of double layer increased linearly with amplification factor 3.0×10-4. This result coincided well with density difference ΔDs of the single evaporated layer which was used for comparison and reference in this experiment. The direction of magnetization of the second thin film was oriented parallel to the direction of the first thin film and this means that the magnetostatical coupling arises simply from the flux of the first thin film.

    From the results of polarized absorption spectra and MO calculations, the electronic structures of p-diethylamino and p-nitro substituted benzenediazonium cations (The unsubstituted cation is abbreviated to BAF, and the p-diethylamino and p-nitro substituted cations to p-BAF-N (C2H5) 2 and p-BAF-NO2, respectively.) have been discussed. The first and second excited states wavefunctions (Ψ01 and Ψ02) of BAF belong to 1B2 and 1A1 (C pdint group), respectively. The first excited state wavefunction (Ψ1) of p-BAF-NO2 is a type of 1B2 symmetry and corresponds to Ψ01 of BAF, while Ψ1, of p-BAF-N (C2H5) 2 is of 1A1 symmetry and corresponds to Ψ02 of BAF, i, e., the origin of the first singlet excited state of p-BAF-NO2 is quite different from that of p-BAF-N (C2H5) 2. The differences in the photochemical reactivities in both compounds may be attributable to the differences in the nature of the first excited states.

    Delayed development method (i. e., the sensitometry with varied time interval between exposure and development of an emulsion containing a sensitizing dye) was applied to sulfer-sensitized AgBr emulsions to examine the ability of sensitivity centers of sulfur sensitization to capture positive holes. The observation of the destruction of image centers by positive holes has indicated that the sensitivity centers of sulfur sensitization could not capture positive holes effectively. It was also found that positive holes mostly reacted, not with latent images, but with latent sub-images in sulfur-sensitized emulsions.

    Development criterea for sulfur (S), sufur plus gold (S+Au), and reduction (R) sensitized emulsions were studied through the analysis of experimental characteristic curves obtained with mono-grainlayers of the emulsions on the basis of the Poisson statistics. Under a certain range of developing time-though quite narrow for S sensitized emulsion-both the position against log exposure axis and the shape of each characteristic curve did not change and the latter fitted a theoretical curve of a single threshold number of effective photons to make a grain developable, i. e., 4, 3, and 2 for S, S+Au, and R sensitized emulsion, respectively. Gold latensification had no effects on S + Au sensitized emulison while affecting S sensitized one to give the curve for a two-effective quanta threshold. These results were discussed in the light of the current theories of latent image formation in chemically sensitized photographic emulsions.

    This review discusses the state-of-the-art status and future prospects of color ink jet printers. It is argued that among the nonimpact printers, the ink jet printers are best suited for color printing.
    Drop-on-demand ink jet printing is coming up fast and may soon prevail the market of inexpensive multicolor printers, because of its practical combination of reasonable cost and performance. With further development to increase reliability and cut manufacturing cost, the continuous-jet printer, especially the microdot ink jet printer, should have no rival for depicting large amounts of information with near photographic resolution.
    Other important aspects briefly mentioned in designing color printers are the more difficult task of formulating inks and associated paper with suitable chromatic and archival characteristics.
