One of the imaging processes utilizing diazonium compounds is electrolytic recording for facsimile. The influence of the constitution of diazonium compounds upon the reduction mechanism including adsorption at the electrode was studied by cyclic voltammetry. Two reduction peaks
Ep1 and
Ep2 and one oxidation peak
Ep' were observed with p-nitrobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate. The
Ep1 and
Ep2 were observed also with benzenediazonium,
p-bromobenzenediazonium, and
p-chlorobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate. On the other hand, with
p-dimethylaminobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate [(CH
3)
2NBD] only
Ep1 was observed, because the electrode was covered with its reduction prodducts. More negative potential than that corresponding to
E1/2 was required for electrolysis of (CH
3)
2 NBD. The substituent effect on electrolysis is parallel to photolysis but not parallel to pyrolysis.
