    We would like to review current environmental issues related to silver halide photography. Long before a picture can be delivered to a customer, all photographic materials are required to pass environmental assessments at each step of R. & D., Production, and Photofinishing. They are also required to be safe to both people and the natural environment.
    In this paper we will overview the current situation of environmental regulations and social activitites for environmental protection, and also summarise how we, manufactures of photographic products, are working to solve those issues.

    Photopolymers contaning hydrophilic carboxyl groups and photosensitive benzalacetophenone groups are synthesized by condensing the terpolymer comprizing 4-(vinylbenzyloxy) acetophenone, methacrylic acid and 2-HPM (or 2-HEMA, MMA) copolymers with benzaldehyde in alkaline catalyzer. Aqueous alkaline developing solution commercially available for negative type presensitizesd plate can be used for development of these photopolymers.
    Sensitivity of the copolymer is estimated to be 35 mJ/cm2 for UV light. These copolymers are applied to lithographic plate (under coat: diazonium polymer 0.2 μm thickness, top coat 4-(VBz) BAp copolymer 1.0-1.2 μm thickness), and the images with high quality are produced by a lithographic proofing machine. The Printing plate of these copolymers shows high resistivity in use of UV ink. These plates can be well preserved at high temperature (70°C) with high moisture condition.

    In the photographic color printing process, a method which operates to suppress color subject failure and to correct film variability simultaneously is required. To correct film variability, it is necessary to know the tone reproduction characteristics of the color negative film in advance of printing. On the other hand, it is known that density cumulative distribution function of photographic color image is concerned with the photographic characteristic curve of the film. In this paper, a new color correction method using density cumulative distribution function is described and the experimental results are discussed. Further, a pararell image processing system suitable for this color correction method and exposure control is introduced.

    The formation processes of non-silver images in gelatin layers of silver halide photographic materials containing previously synthesized by two-stage chemical processing of asilver image, reactive matrice obtained from nickel hexacyan of errate (II) Ni2 [Fe (CN) 6], upon the reactions with alkaline solutions of dithiooxamide and N, N'-diphenyldithiooxamide. D=f (DAg) relationships have been obtained and analyzed where D is density of a non-silver image formed on the basis of the initial silver image having DAg density, for a wide range of agent concentrations in the solution and various durations of the processing stage. The chemism of the process involved was studied in detail, it was also determined that in the Ni2 [Fe (CH) 6]-N, N'-diphenyldithiooxanide system, the photographic image formed is substantially single-component, while in Ni2 [Fe (CN) 6]-dithiooxamide it is multicomponent. The possibility of practical applications of the process described for image application accompanied by complete silver removal from the layers was pointed out.

    High quality three dimensional images with full accommodation of eye is strongly desired as a new visual information medium. Hologram is one of the most promising method, anddevelopment of holograms has been continued to improve the practical difficulties. This article briefly reviews the principles of white light reconstruction holograms and the recent progress in holography. The topics include the duplication of holograms, photo polymer materials for holographic recording, synthesized holograms, real time hologram display and application of holograms for security.

    The human visual system reconstructs three dimensional world from two retinal images by recovering depth information. Pictorial cues for depth, which include shading, occlusion, contour shape, texture gradient and others, and binocular disparity play important roles for the reconstruction. The meaning of each of the depth cues and the manors of integrating depth information from different cues are discussed.
