    Appearance of skin and skin with make-up has been rated by various representations such as fresh looking skin, sheer skin, and powdery finish. Appearance is, however, dependent on many optical and physiological properties of the skin. It is also due to, of course, the viewing condition, perception, recognition, feeling, emotion and so on. Therefore, relatively little has been studied on the relations betweenappearance and physical conditions of the skin.
    In this paper, image processing techniques such as color trasformation, contrast enhancement and reduction, are introduced for the simulation of various conditions of skin and skin with make-up.
    Texture, color and contrast of those obtained images were analyzed and on the basis of this result, mathematical model was proposed for rating of appearance of skin conditions.
    As the result, it is shown that the value calculated by proposed model is well correlated to the subjective rating by 10 cosmetic researchers.

    In the systhetic study on organic functional materials, more than a hundred compounds containing sulfur and/or nitrogen atoms, such as S-(disubstituted thiocarbamoyl)-N-(substituted formyl) sulfenamides (2), and their related compounds, S-(disubstituted thiocarbamoyl) thiooximes (9), and various heterocycles, were newly synthesized. Their antifogging activity for color film of silver halide photograph were examined as a kind of their functionalities.
    As a results, it was found that the thiooximes 9 as well as the sulfenamides 2 are also an excellent antifoggants which have been shown to be superior to conventional ones mentioned in a previous report, and that their skeletal structure which has a C=S group and its neiboring nitrogen is remarkably responsible for their antifogging asctivity.

    Basic aspects of tonal rendition in hardcopy imaging are discussed with a stress on the difference in photographic and electronic approaches to this problem.
    Further, there are described two topical advances in electronic imaging systems as regards tonal rendition ; one being SMPTE 240M γ and the other the characteristics of Fuji-Xerox A color digital color printer.

    The color nega/paper system has been widely used by amateurs and professional studio photographers. The present article analyzes the tone reproduction in the color nega/paper system to know how much information recorded on the negative film can be transferred onto the final print.
    The current nega/paper system for amateur use is designed so that it can favorably reproduce the information of interest on the print with a reasonable cost and a quick processing, sometimes with a certain loss of gradational information recorded in the film. The one for professional use, on the other hand, is designed to focus on a more faithful tone reproduction with a far reduced loss of information recorded in the film. Further, our analysis on the lightness distribution in some practical scenes indicates that professional photographers have a good command of their shooting techniques to make a full use of the potentials of sensitized products used.

    The techniques of tone reproduction have been devised for various kinds of printing plates. In 4-color process printing, the tones of the original are reproduced by dot gradations. But, there are many essential problems in plate making which are difficult to solve. For example, the difference in density between original films and prints, or the unproportional relationship between density and dot gradation.
    Recently, the screen rulings are getting to finer levels such as 700 or 900, and remarkable improvements can be seen in print quality.
