Scholars of early modern Japan have yet to make extensive use of digital image in their fieldwork despite the number of advantages such technologies offer over conventional cameras and microfilm. This tendency applies equally to the construction of museum exhibits that incorporate historical documents as part of their display. In the hopes of facilitating increased use of these technologies in the field and at museums, this report explores the functionality that scholars will need and expect from such technologies. It focuses on current uses of digital imaging technology in the field and at museums, and identifies issues specific to each. The report concludes with a discussion of digital imaging technology's potential ability to help resolve the challenges posed by fieldwork and museum exhibition.

We have already developed “Fuji INTEGRA system” for film making in graphic arts which achieves high image quality and the reduction of processing waste solutions in 1995. This system, however, was not completed for lack of a high image quality camera film. In order to develop the film, micro-area inhibition technology working at the low pH developer system was needed. In this paper, we report a novel low pH micro-area inhibition technology, which comprises a new class of DIR-Hz with high reactivity even in low pH developer and a nucleation system that is effective to nucleation inhibition. Performance of the high image quality camera film “YS” based on this technology is also described.
