The medical X-ray image had been a “photograph” for a long time. In the meantime, the film continued looking for the optimal contrast and the optimal latitude, and the intensifying screen with a sufficient X-ray absorption and luminescence efficiency was put on the market. A screen film system came to have high sensitivity and resolution, and the medical X-ray image was mostly completed as a photograph. Introduction of the digital image, such as computed tomography and computed radiography, to the medical field changed the form of diagnosis. Although too much expectation is not applied to image processing aiming at the improvement of image quality, computer-aided diagnosis has the power of changing future medical treatment.

For development of the lumbar puncture training system based on VR (Virtual Reality), it is calculate to implement the exact palpation information of human body. By using the physical model of body surface elasticity named haptic texture, we have developed the training system with realistic haptic sense. The problem of this model based on the distance between skin surface and bone, the direction dependency of the reaction force is not considered. In this paper, we propose multidimensional haptic texture that considers the direction dependency.

In laparoscopic surgery, the operator decides the insertion positions of a laparoscope and forceps by their experience and divination. In case of the laparoscopic procedure for D2 lymph node dissection in gastric cancer surgery, pancreas beside the splenic artery disturbs the surgery, so the insertion positions of the medical appliances are crucial. In our previous research, we developed a system to decide the insertion positions of the medical appliances preoperatively. To implement the simulation system, we need segmentation and reconstruction of the three dimensional shapes of the body surface, pancreas and splenic artery from CT images but the segmentation of pancreas is extremely difficult. In this paper, we propose a novel method for the segmentation of pancreas from CT images using level set method.

The device for the mammography is used in X-ray plant and the intensifying screen film is used for detector. It took a picture of phantoms such as beads and the plastic fibers by two techniques (contact imaging and phase contrast imageing). The frequency analysis was done to the obtained images. A result, signal intensity in the image that had been obtained by phase contrast imaging indicated a high value in the total frequency region compared with signal intensity in the image that had been obtained with contact imaging.

Phase contrast imaging has been studied intensively using X-rays from synchrotron radiation and microfocus x-ray tubes. We have created a new method of analyzing edge effect in phase contrast imaging with practical x-ray tubes for medical use. Based upon this theory, we have developed a full-field digital phase contrast mammography system in order to provide such high sharp images as conventional screen-film mammography. We would like to describe our basic concept for application of phase contrast technology to digital mammography, especially on magnification ratio in digital mammography.

We developed the new printer system for medical images with the latest ink-jet technology. The system uses “five kinds of gray ink” which has different density in order to reproduce a precise density step. The parameters for density reproduction were optimized by the experimental results of the minimum resolution of the density step of human eyes on the film image printed by a conventional medical laser imager. We also evaluated the reliability of the system based on the results from the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis.The result shows that the ink-jet printer system has quite similar characteristics with a dry imager.

We have found that chemical sensitizations of silver halides are very effective to achieve elevated speed in our photothermographic materials with a water-dispersible binder. Our materials clearly differ from reported photothermographic materials with poly-vinylbutyral as a binder and its organic solvent. We will report the behavior of silver halides in this new material.

The silver image tone in water-coated photothermographic materials usually depends on the image density in contrast to that in organic solvent-coated one. It was revealed by TEM observation that the size of developed silver particles depended on the image density owing to the absence of sphere of influence in water-coated photothermographic materials, while it did not in organic solvent-coated ones owing to the presence of sphere of influence. While the morphologies of the developed silver particles were not depend on the image density in this case, the silver image tone was greatly affected by the morphological change resulted from the other developing system such as the toner variation.

ISO 20462, a three-pan standard, is being developed by WG18 (Electronic Still Picture Imaging) of TC42 (Photography). All three parts will be published this year. This standard describes two novel perceptual methods, the triplet comparison technique and the quality ruler, that yield results calibrated in just noticeable differences (JNDs). Part 1, “Overview of psychophysical elements, ” discusses specifications regarding observers, test stimuli, instructions, viewing conditions, data analysis, and reporting of results. Part 2, “Triplet comparison method, ” describes a technique involving simultaneous five-point scaling of sets of three stimuli at a time, arranged so that all possible pairs of stimuli are compared exactly once. Part 3, “Quality ruler method, ” describes a real-time technique optimized for obtaining assessments over a wider range of image quality.

We developed the camera system that can acquire a high-resolution colorimetric image to reproduce actual scenes accurately. This system is based on color sequential technology consisted of a monochromatic digital camera and three color filters. Furthermore, to improve measurement accuracy, an image data is corrected by using a set of calibration data. The set of calibration data are calculated from color chart optical data measured by using a telespectroscope. We tested the accuracy of the calibrated image data under different illuminants. It was satisfactory result to develop high fidelity imaging system.

In this research, we construct a system to match the glossiness of the images on different devices for real object. When we construct a glossiness model, we used a still image. However, we usually perceive the glossiness by the movement of the real object. Consequently, we construct two glossiness models by the subjectivity evaluation experiment that used the still image and used an interactive image, and the effectiveness of these models was evaluated. From the effectiveness evaluation experiment result, it is confirmed that effectiveness of the reproduction model using an interactive image is higher than the other model.

Many researchers have been developed the technique using high luminance and contrast projection display to control and reproduce the appearance on the various objects. It is important to reproduce glossiness among appearance. However, the shape and the position of the glossiness part is changed by the observer's eye position, it had not been considered. Then, in this research, the glossiness part of the object from each aspect is calculated based on the observing point information acquired with a magnetic positional sensor and it's projected by a projector. With this technique, we can control and reproduce the appearance following to the eye position on real-time.

Image display using a dome screen or a spherical screen brings observers an immersive feeling. In such a system, however, accurate color reproduction is not easy because of the multiple reflection of projected light inside the dome. In this study, the multiple reflection characteristics are measured and modeled by a simple function. Based on the model, a simple color pre-correction method is proposed and its effectiveness is demonstrated through the experiments.

This paper discussed the way to evaluate the tonal characteristics of the digital photography system in terms of Camera-through Sensitometry (CTS) which has been cultivated in the traditional photography. The tonal characteristics of reproduction image on the CRT monitor shot by digital still camera (DSC) was directly measured by colorimetric analysis. The lightness data on the displayed softcopy image of lightness linear single color step charts showed linear relation with the input data level. The slope of those characteristics indicated the qualitative tone characteristics of DSC. Our previous research discussed the specific tonal features reproduced by each DSC model using the step chart of lightness. In this paper, the authors took photographs of bright cone objects and investigated the effect of DSC's tone on the bright tone analysis. As a result, it turned out that the step chart limited to the bright domain of lightness is appropriate to evaluate each DSC's tonal characteristics toward bright objects of photograph.

Formation of multiple layers of sensitizing dyes on a silver halide grain was studied from the viewpoint of intermolecular forces among them. We found it possible to form multiple cyanine-dye layers on a silver halide grain by enhancing such intermolecular forces as electrostatic, hydrophobic, and van der Waal s ones between the primary and secondary adsorbed dye layers. The secondary adsorbed dye layer significantly increased spectral sensitivity in the wavelength region of the light, which it absorbed. The fluorescence of these dyes revealed that the energy transfer took place from the secondary layer to the primary one.

Selenium and tellurium sensitization centers
1 were characterized by wideabsorption bands with peaks at 520nm and tails ending at 760nm, while fog centers by wide bands extending from 500nm to wavelength longer than 780nm. These results were coincided with that for sulfur sensitization.
2 The activation energies for the formation of chalcogen sensitization centers were 32.0kcal/mol (S), 34.0 (Se), and 38.2 (Te), while those for the formation of the corresponding fog centers were 39.8kcalimol (S), 29.8 (Se), and 20.7 (Te), respectively. The order of the size of chalcogenide ions is S
2-<Se
2-<Te
2-. By extending our model for a sulfur sensitization center
3 to chalcogen sensitization centers, it is thought that the increase in the size of a chalcogenide ion made it difficult for the ions at lattice sites to move for the formation of the corresponding sensitization center. In addition, the order of activation energies for the formation of fog centers coincided with the order of the Gibbs Free Energies for the formation of the corresponding silver chalcogenide, supporting the idea that a fog center of chalcogen sensitization is a cluster of the coresponding silver chalcogenide.

The state of iodide ions on cubic AgCl grains was studied by measuring and analyzing the physical properties of the grains in emulsions, to which an aqueous solution of KI was added. It was judged that iodide ions were adsorbed on the grains (1), and then involved in the formation of AgI (2) and AgClI (3). It was indicated that the addition of small amount of iodide ions (-1 mol%) to an AgCl emulsion caused the increase in the ionic conductivity of the grains by more than two orders of magnitude, converted the diffusion-limited kinetics into reaction-limited one for the electron-trapping process on the grain surface, and enhanced the electron-trapping by sulfur sensitization centers.

A study was made on the mechanism of twin plane formation during the nucleation ofAgBr and AgCl grains. The nuclei were set to grow without dissociation and re-nucleation. The grains thus obtained had (111) faces on the surface and the number of twin planes in each grain was judged according to a conventional way on the basis of its shape. The dependence of the number of twin planes per grain on the probability of twin plain formation was in accordance with binominal distribution. The ratio of the number ofAgBr grains with parallel twin planes to all the grains with multi twin planes got to more than 50% while that ofAgCl grains was about 10%. The result was explained by the difference of growth rate of (111) and (100) faces between AgBr and AgCl grains.

It got image holograms by the method which got the images composed of gold particles or a gold layer using silver halide photosensitive materials. The image hologram reproduced from the master hologram with an Ar laser was recorded on the photographic plate, and the gold deposition development made the image hologram composed of gold particles. The image with gold layer was obtained by baking this. The hologram composed of gold particles was a transmittance type, and the image hologram with purple color was observed with the transmitted light. The hologram composed of a gold layer was a surface relief type, and the image hologram with a gold luster was observed with the reflected light. As the image hologram of a gold layer consists of only a glass base and the diffraction gratings with a gold layer, this image has high stability.

Viscosity of blend solutions of gelatin and three types (ι, κ, andλ) of carrageenan was studied. Each carrageenan characteristically increased the viscosity of the gelatin blend solutions. Effect of molecular weight lowering by water jet treatment for carrageenans was also studied. Interaction between gelatin and each carrageenan was discussed.

To improve the track detector using silver halide photography the gold deposition development technique was applied instead of the normal development. Nuclear tracks composed of dense gold clusters were obtained. This method has several advantages. As the developed silver does not form filaments, a boundary becomes clear so that the observation with an optical microscope becomes easy. As the size of gold particles does not depend on the size of silver halide grain but depends on the deposition period, clear nuclear tracks were obtainable independent of the kind of the emulsion. As the developers do not contain harmful reductants and inorganic salts of the high concentration, disposal of the developer waste solution is easy.

The electron beam with adjusted acceleration voltage is the flow of the electron having constant energy. The constant energy can be given to each silver halide grain by the irradiation of electron beam. The latent image speck formed on a cubic unsensitized emulsion exposed to the electron beam using a transmittance electron microscope was detected by the arrested development technique. The number of the them formed on one grain was counted, and the dispersion of the latent image speck was studied. Number of latent image specks formed by one electron with high energy on one grain was nearly one between the energy range of 40 and 80 keV. But, a latent image speck was formed newly by the second or more electrons.

On the early morning of 28 October 1891, the great earthquake “NOBI JISHIN” struck Gifu and Aichi prefectures. It was the first occasion for photographers to document an earthquake disaster after they converted wet collodion process into dry plate photography. However, little is known about who made those photographs, how the photographs were taken and published. The authors have been conducting a survey of the old photo-collections, such as the collection of Nagasaki University Library. During the survey, hand-colored photographs of the Nobi Earthquake were found and some new knowledge of the photographers was acquired.

Last autumn, I presented a paper entitled “The Comparison of Image S t ab i 1 i t ies of Photographs at long term dark Condi t ion between these Stabi 1 i t ies by accelerated Test” At this meeting, I reported on research in which samples that had suffered actual image deterioration during long-term storage (6-10 years) were subjected to further storage of 6 to 10 years under the recommended conditions for long-term storage (7°C, 40% RH), during which time I confirmed the nearly total inhibition of image deterioration.

The photographs of Hayashibara Museum of Art Collections were kept in a super cooler called “Super Cool & Dry
®” We measured the changes in moisture and temperature on the surface of film negatives stored under various conditions in this unit. A comparison between the results in summertime and those in the wintertime was made and it was found that both results stayed in the safe range even during the summertime despite the ambient high temperature and humidity of the environment. Moreover, when image deterioration was measured, no major change in quality was observed in the film negatives for 6 years' storage in the unit.

In developing reactions, AgX oxidize developing reagents. On the other hand, oxidation of organic molecules such as aniline, pyrrole, thiophene, and so on leads to the formation of conducting polymers. If such monomers can reduce AgX, then conducting polymers are obtained upon developing reactions. Area- or Space-selective formation of conducting polymers is worth studying.

Electrochemical polymerization of 1, 1-dichloro-1-silacyclopentane was carried out to synthesize poly (1-silacyclopentane). Electrochemical co-polymerization of 1, 1-dichloro-1-silacyclopentane and dibutyldichlorosilane gave the copolymers. As the content of the cyclic monomer was increased, the yields decreased, the molecular weights became smaller, and the absorption peak shifted to the shorter wavelength.

By applying texture information of painting to digital prints, it was attempted tomake the picture more preferred. Application of both of frequency and direction information makes atmosphere of picture more pictorial. But if only direction information is applied, it makes picture more preferred.

Effect of addition of various types of noise was investigated. The 1/f noise was most preferred with most of pictures. Especially in case of pictures with abundant texture like leaf, cloud, and wood grain, the 1/f noise was very effective and increased depth feel and texture. Control of noise level depending on image density resulted in better evaluation.

Possibility of application of consumer scanner to image analysis was investigated by comparison of data by 2400dpi scanners with those by a microdensitometer. The measurement of sharpness was limited to lower than 30 cycles/mm. In the measurement of granularity there was no remarkable difference between the two measurement methods. Further sharpness of LCD was measured by scanners.

Flesh color expression has a large influence on image of articles of sale. Information about relationship between flesh color expression and image of articles of sale would be useful for producing advertisement. In this paper numerical data of flesh colors used in advertising photographs and linguistic information about their image were collected to formulate flesh color database. Significant difference in color distribution for each article of sale, image, and color of background was shown. It suggests availability of this database.

If equilluminant stimuli are placed side by side, we lose our where system and feel brilliant or pulsated. This effect is very useful for painting and imaging. In this paper dependence of this effect on combination of hue and luminance was investigated.

There is a report from the research that the aged deteriorated paper would generate organic acids. Photographic enclosure that is made of paper, and an experiment was conducted to confirm the possibility of influence on photographic image in accordance with deterioration of the enclosure for long preservation and to specify the type and amount of the organic acid generated from accelerated aging of enclosure. The organic acid detected by the experiment was extremely small amount (several ppm), and a significant increase in organic acid due to the deterioration of paper could not be identified. At least the organic acid generated from the enclosure would not be the main factor for deterioration of the photographic image.

Organic-inorganic perovskite compounds were known to construct quantum well structure. We have studied on lead-halide organic-inorganic perovskite compounds with optically active molecules into the organic layers. In this study, the compounds that contained several types of well layer with different thickness were prepared. These compounds showed different luminescence properties depending on thickness of organic barrier layer which is controlled by alkyl chain length of alkylammonium cation.

The cellular phone became representative of the mobile device. It has expanded rapidly, because the cellular phone was a tool of communications. Recently, the market has been expanding mainly among Russia, East Europe, India and South America. In well-developed area, cellular phone have changed as wearable sophisticated tool which can enjoy manifold benefits. Display technology trend is greatly attributed to application direction. In accordance with performance improvement of cellular phone, display technology has evolved. However, it should not seem that all cellular phone's function will develop now on. According to consumer needs, functions will be chosen, and cellular phone will be diversified. I suppose that a basic performance becomes to importance again under such a situation. This manuscript describes display technology trend of cellular phone.

In recent days, many types of different displays have been proposed for use in applications of electronic paper [1, 2, 3, 4]. But they have some kind of technical issues should be solved for practical use and we think there is no displays those satisfy all demands. Recently, we have demonstrated that QR--LPD is an attractive technology for use in bistable and reflective displays [5]. With this QR-LPD technology, we are now developing a novel type of flexible, reflective and bistable display. In this paper, we report the strong possibility of QR-LPD for use in electronic paper.
