Photochemical phase transition of polymer liquid crystals (PLCs) was explored for PLCs with mesogenic side-chain phenylbenzoate and cyanobiphenyl. The photochemical phase transition was triggered by photochemical reaction of photoresponsive molecules incorporated physically or covalently into PLCs as a result of lowering of phase transition temperature of the mixtures below the irradiation temperature. Factors affecting the photochemical phase transition are discussed and resolution of stored image was examined.

In order to probe the molecular distribution in two-dimensional molecular as semblies, photochemical properties of octadecylstilbazolium bromide in mixed bilayer membranes with dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide were investigated as well as spectral behaviors. A large hypsochromic shift in the absorption spectrum of the s tilbazolium amphiphile observed in the polyion complex film with chondroitin sulfate indicated formation of phase separated clusters of the stilbazole amphiphiles. Photodimerization reaction of the stilbazole amphiphile was dominant in the phase separated clusters. Though the spectral shift in the complex film with poly(styrene sulfonate) was very small, presence of the clustered species were able to be detected through the photodimerization reaction. Photochemical reaction of the stilbazolium amphiphile is a sensitive probe even for a small change o f the molecular distribution in bilayer membranes.

Benzyl methacrylate polymers of varying tacticities and substituents on the phenyl group were prepared to examine the dependence of energy trap formation on the polymer structure. In solution, lower isotacticity as well as steric hindrance imposed by the substituents suppresses excimer emission which is the sole trap emission observed. In solid film, while excimer-forming sites are the main energy traps for the isotactic polymers, the atactic polymers afford ground-state traps which appear to be formed in sequences other than isotactic ones. Formation of both of these traps is suppressed by the bulky substituents on the phenyl group. Continuous irradiation of the films led to formation of new energy traps, which apparently are stilbene- as well as phenanthrene-type photoproducts.

Mainchain photo-scission in a polymer chain often occurs via oxidation. The rate-determinig step of the chain scission is abstraction of a hydrogen atom accompanied by hydroperoxide formation. Solvent and temperature effects in the photochemical chain scission were studied to promote the photodegradation for prevention of plastic waste pollution. Rate of the mainchain scission was dependent on the species of the organo-halogen solvents of the polymer solution for irradiation, but did not increase linearly with rising temperatures.

Thymine base with long alkyl chain shows wonderful reactivity and perfect reversibility on photoreversible dimerize, splitting reaction by irradiating UV light at 280nm and 240nm. There are three points for this photoreversible recording system. 1). It causes upon the high photo-reactivity of thymine base in film state and in polymer matrix. 2). With long alkyl chain supply suitable ordered thymine bases in film and matrix. 3). Polymer matrix increases the stability of the reactant from outside influences to be in use as a recording materials.

The alignment and the texture of a nematic liquid crystalline phase were regulated by the surface photochromic reactions of azobenzene (Az) pendent polymer films. On the poly(4-n-hexyl-4′-(11-methacryloyloxy-n-undecyl)-oxyazobenzene) film, the nematic phase exhibited three characteristic textures: marbled, homeotropic and schlieren textures, and each one of which was alternatively obtained by controlling photoexposure. Disappearance of the parallel domains and appearance of the homeotropic phase along with UV exposure corresponded to deformation of an oriented structure of
traps-Az in the polymer.

The photoisomerization of azobenzene in poly(dimethylsiloxane) was measured in a wide temperature range(77-288K). The final cis-fraction for the trans-to-cis photoisomerization of azobenzene indicates no temperature dependence above 180K, a little above T
g of poly (dimethylsiloxane), but it decreases with decreasing temperature below 180K. The kinetic model considering local fluctuation of the free-volume was also adopted to the previous results of photoisomerization of azo-compounds and stilbene in polycarbonate, PMMA, (phenoxy resin and polyvinyl alcohol), and the effects of the size of molecules, the mechanism of photoisomerization, the main chain structures of polymers and the formation of hydrogen bonding on the parameters for the model were discussed.
