Plasma-induced radicals formed on a variety of conventional polymers were studied by electron spin resonance (ESR) with the aid of systematic computer simulations. The polymers which are classified to crosslinkable polymers on a radiation effect give the mid-chain radical as a major component while the degradable polymers give the end-chain radical. The controlled-release tablets were formed by oxygen plasma-irradiation on the double-compressed tablet which consists of theophylline as a core material and a mixture of plasma degradable and crosslinkable polymers as a wall material.

Acrylated polyurethane (APU) was synthesized by the reaction of isocyanate polyfunctional polyurethane prepolymer with β- hydroxypropyl methacrylate in the presence of cyclohexanone. The influences of reaction temperature and ratio of starting materials to cyclohexanone in the synthesis reaction were investigated.
The final polymer APU was exposed to electron beam (EB) irradiation. The irradiation dose range was from 10
-7C/cm
2 to 10
-5C/cm
2. In APU, radiation polymerization, which led to crosslinking reaction, occured when the irradiation dose was lower, and the highly irradiated samples were degradated mainly.
The characteristic curve of the LB irradiated APU was obtained. The maximum value of dose, Dmax, which the degradation reaction dominated in APU, was 1.80×10
-5C/cm
2, as observed in experiment. From the measured curve of the relationship of the double bond content in APU on irradiation dose, it was observed that the critical value of dose, Dc, under which crosslinking reaction became the main reaction taking place in APU, was 1.32×10
-5C/cm
2. The sensitivity of APU was 6.42× 10
-6C/cm
2.

The cured films of epoxidized soya bean oil acrylate containing abietic group will exhibit a variety of properties by the proper choice of their components' ucture and molecular weight. In this paper, the general properties of the rosin-modified epoxidized soya bean oil acrylate, such as adhesion, cure rate, glossiness, chemical and abrasion resistance, are discussed and compared with other oligomers without abietic group.

Soluble bis(trihexylsiloxy)silicon naphthalocyanine(
SiNc) having an absorption band in the region of laserdiode emission wavelength(780nm) was used as photoinitiator for radical polymerization. Photopolymer films composed of
SiNc, accelerator, acrylic monomer, and acrylic binder polymer were exposed to laserdiode light (780nm). 3, 3′, 4, 4′-Tetrakis(t-butylperoxycarbonyl)benzophenone
BTTB, 2, 4, 6-tris(trichloromethyl)-s-triazine(
TCT), or N-(p-chlorophenyl)-N-methyl-glycine(
PG) was effective as an accelerator. Photosensitivities varied significantly depending on the kinds of accelerators.
A SiNc-TCT photoinitiator system was found to show a photosensitivity of 30.1J/cm
2(20μm thickness).

The formation of densely cross-linked networks by chain cross-linking photopolymerization is discussed in relation to selected applications in the high technology. All of these applications make use of the speed and of the latitude to meet other requirements by variation of the chemical structure of the monomers. The selection comprises: 1-the replication of optical discs; 2-the bonding of laminated glasses.

Some p-N, N- dimethylamine and diethylamine substituted benzal ketone derivatives (ABK) are used as a new class of sensitizer for laser light induced radical photopolymerization of N-vinyl carbazole (NVC) and methacrylic acid benzal ester (MABE) by combination with diphenyliodonium salt (DPIO). The relative efficiency of various ABK for polymerization of NVC and MABE to record holograms is in the order DEBP>DABA>ABA. An argon ion laser (488nm) is used for exposure. Trichromatic filters were made with the material.

The volume of a photopolymerizable medium may be changed after monomer is converted into polymer. One has not yet precise method for measuring a volume change when a photopolymerization reaction occurs in a film. This paper proposes a holographic method for measuring the volume change (that is the thickness change) of a photopolymerizable film. The method relys on the fact that the volume change can cause a holographic grating period change and result in peak replay wavelength shifts. The volume change can be obtained from the Bragg law, compared the experimental result with the theoretical calculated value.

Mono- and di- iodonium salts of eosin dye, EoEt( Ph
2 I) and Eo( Ph
2 I)
2, as a novel sensitization system for visible photopolymerization were synthesized and studied in comparison with the corresponding bimocular systems (EoNa
2/Ph
2 ICl). The photochemical activity of unimolecular system is much higher than that of bimolecular system. Photobleaching rate obtained decreases in the order Eo(Ph
2 I)
2> EoNa
2/2 (Ph
2 ICl)> EoEtNa/2 (Ph
2 ICl). The same results for radical polymerization were also obtained. The kinetic results of polymerization with Eo(Ph
2 I)
2 as initiator show that the polymerization rate is directly proportional to the concentration of MMA and Eo (Ph
2 I)
2 with exponent of 1.0 and 0.46 respectively. The overall activation energy of polymerization was measured to be 7.0 (kcal.mol
-1). The photopolymerization rate is affected significantly by solvent polarity as a results of variance in absorption spectrum. Multiacrylate photocrosslinking rates obtained in the dry film indicate that the disalt Eo(Ph
2 I)
2 is more efficient than mono salt EoEt(Ph
2 I) and essentially, no reaction occures in the case of bimolecular system (EoNa
2/Ph
2 ICl)

Thirty four indoaniline dyes (3a)-(3v) and (5a)-(5I) were synthesized, and their electronic spectra were measured in n-hexane. The structure of a typical indoaniline dye was determined by X-ray analysis. Full geometry optimization with AM1 method roughly reproduced the X-ray analysis data. Using optimized geometries of dyes (3a)-(3v) and (5a)-(5I) with AM1 method, INDO/S calculations were performed. A good correlation between observed and calculated transition energies was found for a series of indoanilines (3a)-(3v). With few exceptions a correlation for an another series of indoanilines (5a)-(5I) was good. The latter correlation was improved using a peak-separation technique. From these results, INDO/S calculations were proved to be useful for the prediction of transition energies of indoaniline dyes.

4, 4′-Bipyridinium salts with tetraphenylborate anion (abbreviated to TPB
-) showed charge-transfer (CT) absorption above 365nm and broad structureless CT fluorescence with a maximum at 525nm in 1, 2- dimethoxyethane. The excitation of a CT band (λ>365nm) in vacuo resulted in the persistent colour change and the quenching of CT fluoresence due to the accumulation of 4, 4′-bipyridinium radical cations. These results demonstrated that 4, 4′-bipyridinium TPB
- salts can be applied to a photon-mode write-once type (WORM) optical memory.

Efforts were made to stabilize the photochemically generated blue state of poly(tetrahydrofuran) films containing 4, 4′-bipyridinium ion-pair charge-transfer (CT) salts with tetrakis[3, 5-bis(tri-fluoromethyl)phenyl]borate as part of the main chain by coating a protective layer of poly(vinyl alcohol) on them. The excitation of a CT-band of coated polymer films resulted in colour changes from pale yellow to blue both in air and in vacuo. No colour changes were observed in air for uncoated films. The decay of the blue state upon introduction of air to films irradiated in vacuo was also prohibited by a protective layer.
