    We are necessary to establish fine and persuasive body theory. The purposes of tins study are to clarify the mind-body theory of Michael Polanyi in order to have that ground. Our study can be summarized as follows;

    1.The mind-body theory of Michael Polanyi is represented as a hierarchy of levels to be based on tacit knowledge. He grasps that our mind is the principle of a higher level and our body is the principle of a lower level.

    2. Our knowing consists in a from-to relation. We attend from the subsidiary particulars to their comprehensive entity. Our mind are then conscious from certain things which includeour body.

    3. Thouguh the mind depends on the bodily mechanisms, it is not determined by them.

    4. In a strict sense, Polanyi suggests that the mind directly related to the bodily mechanisms. From a oriental point of view, we can grasp that the bodily mechanisms are similar to unconscious quasis-body, an oriental bodily system of "Qi" .

    Since Kamakura era, Bushi had taken Kyujutsu seriously, but there was a marked lowering in the utility of Kyujutsu during Kansei period in Edo. Sadanobu MATSUDAIRA played an active part mainly in this period as a political leader of the Tokugawa Shogunate or a master of Martial Arts. In this sutudy, I paid attention to the point that he developed the new and utility school of Kyujutsu. Summaries were as follows. In Sadanobu MATSUDAIRA's childhood, he was coached Kyujutsu by the superior Bushi. Sadanobu MATSUDAIRA had considered that Kyujutsu was not effective as a military power against the foreign countries. However, he had realized that kyujutsu was one of the methods to rule the world. The new school, OIE-RYU-KYUJUTSU, that was formed by Sadanobu MATSUDAIRA, had something m common with new KOUOTSU-RYU. Both OIE-RYU-KYUJUTSU and new KOUOTSU-RYU were Martial Arts that assumed actual fighting.

    This thesis aims at making clear the process of the establishment of Suifuryu which was once composed of three schools (Shinkageryu,Ittoryu,Shinkagenoryu) .The establisher of Suifuryu is Nariaki Tokugawa,9th land of Mito Clan. The main point of this thesis is as follows:

    1. Shinkageryu was imbibed into Suifuryu and was handed down to Mito Clan by Masaharu Iizuka who was a ronin(a masterless samurai) born in Koshu. The fact is distinct by studying such historical materials as 'SUIFU-BUJYUTU-DENKEI' and 'SUIFURYU-HEIHOU-RYAKUKEI'.

    2. Five Kenjyutu styles out of eight stem from the secret exquisite Kenjyutu styles of shinkageryu. This fact show the samurais (feudal warriors) of those days were going to introduce the secret Kenjyutu styles into Suifuryu Kenjyutu.

    3. The number of Kenjyutu styles of Shinkageryu whish were adopted by Suifuryu is smaller than those of Ittoryu. One of the main cause is that the disciples of Shinkage-ryu were comparatively oflow social standing in Mito Clan.
