(1) The content of vitamin B
1 decreased in cattle put on tread-mill.
(2) The red blood cell counts in animals put on energy work indicated a decrease and the diameter of red corpuscles increased.
(3) Vitamin B
12 in blood indicated a decrease in energy metabolism.
From these findings, vitamin B
12 seems to be essential to energy metabolism in the following relation:
Pyruvate←B
1-enzymatic system
↓CH
3COOH+CO
2 ↑B
1+ATP
B
12 biochemical system
The authors wish to express their sincere thanks to Prof. Y. Kuno (Chairman, Committee on Vitamin B Research) and Prof. M. Shioiri (President of Shiga Agricultural College) for their kind guidance. They are also indebted to Drs. K. Inoue and S. Uchino for their cordial advice. The cost of this research has been defrayed by grants from the Department of Education to which the authors' thanks are due. Table II Variation of vitamin B12 content in energy metabolism
