In atheromatous lesions of the later stages of fatty streaks and the beginning stage of fibrous plaques of 5 rabbits and 3 autopsy cases of man the electron microscopical analysis of the capillaries and venu (without smooth muscle layes) has been performed
The number of visceral type of capillaries with fenestrated endothelial cells was 19 out of all 139 capillaries and 31 out of all 169 capillaries in these rabbit and human subjects respectively and the remaining were muscle type capillaries.
In the visceral type capillaries the pores with diaphragms were found in all 31 capillaries of rabbits and in 11 out of all 19 capillaries of man. The width of pores with diaphragms was 600-1700Å in rabbits, and was 400-2000Å in men. In human lesions pores without diaphragms were found in their visceral type of capillaries and their width amounted 2000-3000Å.
The discontinuous parts of endothelial cells simply surrounded by basement membrane alone were found in atheromatous lesions of men and rabbits and in some atheromatous lesions of rabbit the whole wall was sometimes composed by basement membrane alone.
The opening of endothelial gaps was also found in atheromatous lesions of rabbits showing the edematous arterial reaction by injection of Pelican ink.
These morphological characteristics of blood vessels of atheromatous lesions suggest the importance of vasoactive substances especially of inflammatory substances for the progress and aggravation of atheromatous lesions.
