Electrophysical agents are a rehabilitation treatment for various diseases. Although electrophysical agents are an effective treatment method for pain management and other conditions, such as muscle recovery after surgery and disuse disability, few studies show scientific evidence confirming the efficacy of electrophysical agents. In this study, we examined the usefulness of electrophysical agents for treating osteoarthritis, lower back pain, cancer, severe cerebrogenic movement disorders, and feeding and swallowing disorders. The effectiveness of electrophysical agents was reported in each disease, and they are recommended in rehabilitation treatments. However, further evidence is needed to verify the effectiveness of electrophysical agents.

Aspiration pneumonia currently ranks among the top causes of death in Japan and is an important social problem. Therefore, there is growing interest in rehabilitation and prevention initiatives. In particular, dysphagia can develop from a variety of causes and significantly reduces quality of life. Therefore, early and accurate assessment of dysphagia and initiation of feeding and rehabilitation is necessary; however, improving the quality of such rehabilitation is a challenge. This article first describes the mechanism of swallowing, touching on the 'five stages of ingestion' and the 'process model' of swallowing movements. It then summarises the diseases that cause feeding and swallowing disorders in adults and considers the effects of sarcopenia, which is considered a problem in the elderly. Various multifaceted assessment methods for evaluating dysphagia are also introduced, as well as the development of assessment methods for videofluoroscopic and videoendoscopic swallowing examinations, which have recently become the gold standard.

In the context of rehabilitation, it is important to assess the nutritional status of patients and provide appropriate nutrition to maximize the effectiveness of treatment. However, a significant number of patients admitted to rehabilitation wards are undernourished, necessitating staff to deepen their knowledge of nutrition and collaborate closely with physicians and dietitians. It is desirable for rehabilitation staff to assess and understand the nutritional status of these patients before formulating a treatment plan. This paper introduces the latest assessment methods for rehabilitation and nutrition, providing a summary and discussion of nutrition concerning stroke, cancer disabilities.

The author is a speech-language pathologist at a dental clinic that opened a pediatric speech and language department in May2023. We investigated the characteristics of children visiting the pediatric speech and language department. The most common age at the time of consultation was three years, with 70% between three and six years of age. Most (60%) of the patients were consulted by the clinic’s dental staff, which may have influenced the results. Half of the patients had errors of articulation and phonology as their chief complaint, and 20% were older than seven years. This suggests that the role of a speech-language pathologist at a dental clinic is to deal with articulation and phonological disorders during infancy and after commencing school. However, since articulation is generally acquired by four years of age, it is necessary to establish an early intervention system to help children acquire articulation by preschool age. The presence of speech-language pathologists in dental clinics was considered significant because, compared to assessments of the speech-language pathologist, evaluations by dental staff using the Oral Dysfunction Checklist only identified half of the children with incorrect articulation. Our findings confirm that many children with disorders were being missed. Concerningly, few speech-language pathologists work in dental clinics. A research report on speech-language pathology in dental clinics is needed to raise awareness of this important issue.

This study introduced our welfare services to children with disabilities. Speech-language pathologists can visit childcare centers to observe children who use their services directly. The child’s actual conditions can be confirmed on such visits, allowing speech-language pathologists to initiate targeted interventions. However, it is difficult to conduct objective testing in childcare centers. Methods to objectively evaluate children who use these services need to be considered

To move persons who use wheelchairs in the event of a major earthquake, we have started developing mobility support devices, focusing on a “sled structure.“ Our current prototype achieved results of 4.93 s on the 10-m driving test on a sandy beach at full speed and 12.58 s for normal walking; good results compared to the 27.4 s of movement in the rear of a car reported in the Kochi Prefecture handbook. In the future, we plan to add a moving structure for use in the stairwell of towers being evacuated and put into practice while conducting evacuation shelter training.

Boccia is a Paralympic sport played by athletes with severe neurological impairments affecting all four limbs. In some communities, physical therapists take on the responsibility of organizing boccia tournaments and also act as referees. Increasing the involvement of physical therapists in promoting boccia within the community is thought to positively influence the participation of individuals with disabilities in sports and contribute to the promotion of their health.
