    The role of engineers is not to choose the function what customers want but tochoose a good generic system to perform the function required. There are many generic systems to perform the same required function. From the view point of quality engineering, a simple system is not good to improve its functionability. A system to be developed should have enough complicate non lineality. Otherwise, we can not develop a generic system to reach the level of high functionability at reasonable cost by setting.level of various parameters of thesystem. The generic technology development using a test peace is the best time to improve robustness of technology is emphasized in this article.

    It seems that some of the criminals who make "Quality Engineering" hard to understand are the calculation formulas of SN Ratio. lt is true that there are many engineers who cannot understand the formulas of SN Ratio and cannot proceed. So, I would like to explain how to caluculate SN ratio and the meanings of formulas using some data in this edition.

    The Charpy impact test machine was developed to measure impact energy. Parameter design was conducted to improve the performance by optimizing the component parts in the machine. The Charpy impact test pieces used as the signal factor were manufactured by the condition which was obtained from a separate heat treatment study. An improvement of 3.3 db over the conventional testing machine was accomplished.

    Parameter design used in quality engineering was applied in the study of microalgae production process in order to obtain the ideal growth curve. ln the study, seven factors including illumination and six media components were used as control factors and the experiments were conducted using an L18 orthogonal array. Eight culture days were considered as the signal factor levels. Optical density (OD680nm) was measured every day. lt was considered as the ideal situation that the logarithm of optical density be linear. According to the results of experiments, sensitivity, S, and SN ra tio of dynamic characteristic were calculated. The optimum condition was determined from control factor levels which gave the large values of sensitivity and SN ratio. An improvement was estimated as 4.8386 db in SN ratio and 1.2851 db in sensitivity. The confirmatory experiment showed a good reproducibility.

    Although the viscosity of coating material depends on the customer demand, the viscosity stability is always needed. Here we have studied the improvement of the viscosity stability using quality engineering. The objective characteristic, S/N ratio η , was used as the measure of the viscosity stability. The experiments were conducted on the orthogonal array with the assigened control factors. And the S/N ratio η is ware analyzed and the conditions of the small viscosity change were found. Our optimum conditions improved the viscosity stability a lot in comparison with the current conditions,which showed the effectiveness of quality engineering. Besides the viscosity stability study, we analyzed the sensitivity and investigated the method how to obtain the target viscosity. Although the viscosity of coating material depends on the customer demand, the viscosity stability study, we analyzed the sensitivity and investigated the method how to obtain the target viscosity.
