    TM, Taguchi Methods, uses OA Orthogonal Arrays, and ANOVA, Analysis of Variance, as in DOE, Design of experiments. The difference between TM and DOE was discussed in this article. TM uses OA as an inspection device to check existance of interactions among control factors by assigning those factors to OA so that main effects are firmly confounded with various interactions as much as possible. Because TM is intcrested in the reproduciability of technology developed within laboratories by using mostly specimens or simulation models on actual products. The S/N ratio used in TM are based on the mathematical analysis called quadratic expansion,more generally Hermitian form expansion, but not on regression analysis used in traditional DOE. TM also strongly recomends to usc a dynamic S/N ratio to measure the functionality of generic function. TM docs not want to use a static S/N ratio related with objective function or any quality cahracteristics, as far as possible.

    Japanese and English as the language is the outcome of the quite different cultures of Japanese and Western peoples. The corresponding translated word for the same term in different language may have a quite different significance. Even using a same Japanese word between Japanese people, in same cases, its meaning is quite diffrent. The author,after talked on his experiences , he wrote on same general difference of attitude of Japanese and Western peoples, for example the discussion at the forum. And he emphasis the importance of Quality oriented education in school. especially in university as a literacy. And also, the multiple approach is the key to the innovation of the improuvements of Qualities of output. He expects Quality Engineering will make remarkable contribution to enrich the people of the world by Japanese and English speaking peoples.

    There are several things interfering with the implementation of Quality Engineering in R&D and production departments. I am in charge of promoting implementation of Quality Engineering in Fuji Xerox Co., Ltd. Therefore, I have heard many criticisms about Quality Engineering by engineers and managers. I would like to talk about "things interfering with the implementation of Quality Engineering". The reason I chose it as the last theme for my series is because it is important to organize and analyze them in order to spread Quality Engineering.

    The new materials which are composed of metals and ceramics have many interesting and useful properties in mechanical, electrical and chemical fields. Recently, a great deal of attentions have been held to the potential utilization of these properties. In this paper, the forming process for such materials was researched using a low pressure plasma spraying equipment including two independent metal and ceramic powder supplying devices and a plasma jet flame. Using quality engineering approaches, the generic function of plasma spraying was used for evaluation. After the optimization, metal and ceramic materials can be sprayed under the same condition. Also, it is possible to produce the sprayed deposit layer of any metal/ceramic mixing ratio for both dispersed type and inclined type products.

    In product development, it is important to reduce cost and the time for development. ln the development of a manufacturing process, it is also important to develop the process to be energy efficient. The laser welding process for thin boards has been studied in the industry. lt is considered as one of the most difficult technology because of the variability of strength after welding. In this study, dynamic characteristic was used to develop a flexible high performance laser welding process. As the result of this study, we were able to develop the laser welding technology to obtain a standard deviation which is 1/3 of current laser welding.

    It is important to develop a measurement technology that can be used to quantify the comfortability of wearing. Up to now however, the most effective way of evaluating comfortability is still the sensory tests conducted by human being . ln this paper, the discriminating ability of panels, which is the sensor in sensory evaluation, was studied. An experiment was conducted to investigate the ability of discriminating the difference in jackets patterns. lt was found from the experiment that the rate of panel members having a high discriminating ability was only 6 percent, which is less than forecasted. lt was also found that the threshold value of discrimination was about 10 mm. SIN ratio. applied in measurement technology was used as an index for discriminating ability, and we concluded that its use was valid and effective.
