The ultimate goal of quality engineering is to expand the total amount of socialfreedom. As one strategy, we would like to consider simply increasing theextent of application of quality engineering. This means a horizontal increase inthe number of useful examples. Although it is necessary not to lose sight of theessentials, if the hurdles in applying quality engineering can be lowered, thatshould stimulate the spread of quality engineering. Tolerance design is a particularlyinactive field of quality engineering. One reason seems to be that thehurdles in the basic procedure are too high. In the analysis of variance, forexample, to calculate the final loss it is necessary to separate primary effectsfrom secondary effects. To make tolerance design easier to use, we considered asimplification of the procedure. Specifically, if instead of the normally prescribedthree levels, only two levels are used in the orthogonal array, it becomesunnecessary to separate the factor effects. Using only two levels also saves timeand labor by making the orthogonal array more compact. The case study thatfollows concerns a switch and camera actuator produced at the authors’ firm.
