    The role of quality engineering is not a hardware technology but a software technology to find just one numerical number to measure the distance of functionability of hardware from the ideal function.

    Discussed here is to use Mahalanobis distance as a numerical number to measure the distance of any input-pattern from each nominal pattern for pattern recognition.

    This type of soft technology would be one of the most important areas in future engineering fields.

    There are misunderstandings on the philosophy and approaches in quality engineering. These are causes by the confusion of mathematical statistics with quality engineering.

    For example, the way of treating a statistic such as standard deviation in mathematical statistics is based on the distribution of a population. In engineering application however, it is almost impossible in most cases to conjecture the distribution. Because of this, the statistic must be treated based on a measured value something that is physically measurable.

    This paper states the role of mathematical statistics in quality engineering and clarifies the differences between the two through the cases of process control, product inspection, the diagnosis of human health, the role of orthogonal arrays and new product development.

    Not only sprouting culture but plant growth condition has been decided in most cases by judging the desirable characteristics such as big growth and abundant harvest. However, the sprout is cultured under inhibitory condition which is shading culture. So it tends to breakdown and decay before long. The sprouting condition has been also accompanied with evaluations including the principle contradiction, that is, "The one which grows up early decays rapidly and the one which is late growth does not grow to be big. " Here, the optimization was conducted by parameter design considering weight change versus the culture time to be dynamic SN ratio on the growth curve as an evaluation to decide the sprouting condition.

    Laser beam welding is a high energy density, low heat input peocess. But in general laser beam welding especially of thin sheet metals de mands high accuracy in seam preparation and positioning. These parameters have a effect upon strength of laserwelded joint. Therefor in this paper,the feasibility of using the quality engineering is studied for parameter design of laser welding.

    In 1982, Aichiken Keisokukanri Gijutu Kenkyuukai introduced a measurement control method to the engineers working in measurement control and quality engineering field in Aichi prefecture. The fourth edition of "Measurement Control for Manager and Superintendent" was used as the material for the introduction. ln the material, part of quality engineering method was included. Aichiken Keisokukanri Gijutu Kenkyuukai has been continuing the promotion of quality engineering methods. In 1991, Aichiken Keisokukanri Gijutu Kenkyuukai applied JIS Z 9090, Mesurement-General Rules for calibration system, on the determination of the optimum maintenance system to control the edge dimension in a cutting device which is used to cutthe fur on the cloth surface. This paper introduces the optimization of the measurement control system. The significance of this study is to balance the loss caused by the error of measurment and the loss caused by the cost of mesurement, then minimize the total loss.
