    Carbon Brushes are used to supply power to rotors used in AF cameras or the heaters inside the light-sensitive drums of copying machines. Such brushes have been developed every time a new product was planned. ln the development, quality characteristics such as temperature rise, brush holder deformation, wear or sparks, etc. have been traditionally used. In this paper, the technology development of carbon brushes performed before product planning is reported using the characteristic which relates to energy transferring instead of traditionally used characteristics.

    In an electro-deposition coating process for automobile body manufacturing, a study was conducted to improve the stability of film formation so that film thickness is uniform throughout all body locations. This is especially important since the body structure is becoming more and more complicated due to the requirements to improve collision safety. By the applying quality engineering, the study was completed in a short period of time, and a significant improvement was achieved not only in thickness uniformity but also the process productivity.

    A parameter design optimization was conducted on an automatic retard roller document feeder, Although the study did not involve any new technology and the results did not exceed the current performance level, the educational impact illustrating the effectiveness of quality engineering approaches can be expected.

    In this study, quality engineering (Taguchi Methods) was applied to the formulation of an ointment. ln order to obtain good ointment permeability through skin, the "in vitro" permeability was measured as the duality characteristic. The excised skins from rats and micro-pigs were used in the permeation test. All ingredients in the model ointment were selected as control factors and assigned to an L18 orthogonal array. Animal species were considered as the noise factor conditions so that the optimum condition would be robust against species. For the generic function, it was considered that the cumulative amount of penetration should be proportional to time. Zero point proportional equation, Y= βT was used, where Y, β and T denote the cumulative drug penetration per unit, constant, and time respectively. As a result, excellent permeability was obtained under the optimum condition with little dependency on different species. Such success was accomplished with a single repetition in the test, in contrast to traditional testing with many repetitions in animal experimentation.

    It has been emphasized in recent quality engineering discussions that signal factors and noise factors come from customer's conditions. The authors had studied many injection molding projects in the past. First, hold pressure was used as the signal, and later, mold dimension was used as the signal in the transformability approach. ln recent studies, screw rpm was considered as the signal from the viewpoint of the injection molding function. ln this study,the customer's conditions were used as the signal. Gauges were produced by the injection molding machine. These gauges were used as the standards for evaluating dimensions. The SN ratio was calculated from the load and deformation relationship.
