    The function of photographic image formation is represented by the characteristic curves of photo sensitive materials. In color photography, the variation of characteristic curves of three colors (B, G, and R) affects color changes. Since the latitude of customer requirement is tight, the stability of characteristic curves is important. Traditionally, the deviation of characteristic curves from targets had been measured. Although noise factors were included in experiment and SN ratio was used together with analysis of variance, this was a non-dynamic approach. It is proposed in this study to use the function of chemical reaction and compare with the results from the traditional approach : observation of characteristic curves.

    A parameter Design was conducted on an electro-deposition coating process for aluminum shapes. In the study, the relationship between time and the amount of electricity input to the process was optimized. Under the optimum condition, an annual saving of 5,400,000 Yen was predicted through the reduction of coating materials and electric power.

    In the copy machines or printers using the electro-photography system, it is important to design the toner charging function. In that respect, it is necessary to optimize the method that measures the amount of toner particle charge. This paper reports the results of studying a measuring technology that focused on the charging function of each individual particle. An E-SPART analyzer was used for measurement. From the results of this study, a measuring method that is more efficient and more rational than the existing one has been developed. This new method has been applied in the research of developers and developing devices.

    In current and future spacecraft that are equipped with autonomous guidance and control systems, the fault tolerance technology is becoming more and more important. The first step in the technology is to detect and identify the fault. In order to diagnose the fault of onboard sensors for a future Japanese spacecraft, the "Fault Diagnosis Program" has been studied based on the output from the software called "Observers." In this paper, the feasibility of applying Mahalanobis Taguchi System to the program was examined using a simplified sensor model.

    In many multivariate diagnosis applications, Mahalanobis-Taguchi System (MTS) is becoming increasingly popular. This method uses Mahalanobis distance (MD) to distinguish "normal" conditions from "abnormal" conditions. In this paper MTS methodology is compared with an alternate method using Mahalanobis-Taguchi-Gram-Schmidt process (MTGS). Use of MTGS makes diagnosis process easy, as there is no need to invert the matrices, which may become complex if we have large number of variables. If we resort to MTGS, there is no need to use Orthogonal Arrays (OAs) and S/N ratios of each variable can be estimated independently. The advantages of MTGS method over MTS are clearly discussed with help of medical diagnosis example. Computer software programs are developed for the purpose of comparison.
