    In this paper, the improvement of super heat-resisting property for liquid crystal polymer films (LCP films) was reported. Using the current heat-resistance improvement process, it takes 20hours to complete the treatment, and reaches a maximum heat resisting temperature of 300℃. The limit is not satisfactory to the customers, especially the ones in the U.S. A study was conducted to shorten the processing time as well as to increase the heat-resistance temperature to a lower level of 320℃. For the ideal function, film thickness and the temperature when the heat deformation starts must be linear. Such linear relationship is generated by the formation of a new micro-structure in liquid crystal polymer. After the heat treatment condition was optimized, the time of heat treatment was shortened by four to five hours and the heat resistance temperature was raised to a range between 320 to 400℃. Thus a super heat-resistance film was produced to withstand 400℃.

    The electro-photographic recording system is widely used in copy machines,printers and facsimiles. There are two important quality characteristics in the system : the amount of toner particle charge and toner concentration. In this study, the condition of the blow-off measurement that measures these characteristics was optimized. The sample weight is considered as the signal, but the true values of toner weight and toner particle charge are unknown. Therefore, the amount of samples are varied in such a way that the ratios between samples are accurately set. The SN ratio is calculated using the case when the signal factor level ratio intervals are known. From the study, a significant improvement in the measuring accuracy for toner charge and toner weight is achieved.

    In the development of film capacitors, some objective characteristics have been traditionally used. In this study, the charging/discharging characteristic was used as the function of capacitors. In order to observe the charging/discharging characteristic under electrically stressed conditions, both direct current and alternating current were charged in the experiment. As a result, the SN ratio was improved by 13.1 db and the conclusions were well reproduced. It was also concluded that the objective characteristics will be improved and that this appropriate for evaluation.

    In manufacturing processes, how to improve quality and reduce cost is mostly determined by experience or from the past records. If temperature affects product quality, for example, we need to determine the temperature measuring interval and control limits for adjustment. But such traditional approaches are neither theoretical nor economical. Those controlling conditions vary from time to lime depending on different situations. The economical aspect such as how much cost should be spent to monitor, temperature for example, and maintain quality has been neglected most of the time. In the Quality Engineering approach, the optimum controlling conditions are determined by balancing the cost of control and the cost of quality. This approach is effective and widely applicable to all manufacturing processes. This paper reports a successful case which was applied to a manufacturing process of semiconductor rectifiers. In the process, the temperature measuring interval was determined such that the cost was reduced while. the quality was maintained, This contributed to customer satisfaction.

    In an injection molding process, the products with a thickness over 5mm are called thick walled products. Many of these products have problems such as sink,voids or abnormal shrinkage, and therefore considered difficult products to mold. To avoid such defects, molding time and cooling time have to be extended,resulting in long overall molding cycle time. In order to improve the process, the generic function was considered where "material must be uniformly filled to any spot inside the mold." After the optimization using this generic function, molding cycle time was reduced and the quality loss was cut to one third.

    In Taguchi Methods, lot of emphasis is given to Signal-to-Noise (S/N) ratios. S/N ratio is a very important measure to improve the functionality of a system. In this paper, the importance of S/N ratios for improving the performance of multidimensional systems is discussed. The role of S/N ratios for predicting the performance of multidimensional systems using Mahalanobis-Taguchi System (MTS) or Mahalanobis-Taguchi-Gram-Schmidt (MTGS) process is also discussed. The paper describes the different types of S/N ratios with their advantages as compared to the classical multivariate statistical methods.
