    Theoretical and numerical investigations are made on the accuracy of some approximate methods for testing 2×2 contingency tables with both marginal totals fixed. So-called "range method" using binomial probability paper is shown to break down in case both marginal totals are highly unbalanced ; a measure is worked out. The modified Nishibori method proposed in the present paper performs better than Yates' corrected x2.
