Soil-solution distribution coefficients, Kds, ofI
-andIO
-3were measured by a batch method for 63 soil samples collected from upland fields, paddies, forests and open areas throughout Japan. The soil properties were also measured. The Kds for air-dried soils ranged widely from 0.07 to 262l kg-1forI
-and from 0.36 to 127l kg-1 forIO
-3.
The medians forI
-andIO
-3were 6.25 and 6.481 kg-1, respectively. The Kds (bothI
-andIO
-3)
for Andosols, one of the most typical Japanese soils derived from deposits of volcanic ash, were higher than those for the other soils. The Kds for sandy samples were low. Relatively good correlations were found between Kds and active-Al,
active-Fe,
TOC, total-N
and water content. The results indicated thatI
was adsorbed on the surfaces of sesquioxides ofFe
andA1,
noncrystalline silicates such as allophane, organic materials and complexes of metals with humus.

The natural background radiation was measured at 109 places in Fukuoka Prefecture by the ionization chamber and theNaI (Tl)
scintillation detector. The mean values of the absorbed dose rate for the total ionizing radiation and the terrestrial γ-ray components were 76.4 and 40.7 nGy/h, respectively. The absorbed dose rate for the ionizing cosmic ray component was calculated to be 31.8 nGy/h from the regression analysis between the total ionizing radiation and the terrestrial γ-ray components. If we assume that the outdoor occupancy factor is 1, the collective effective dose equivalent due to the natural background radiation is calculated to be 2 720 man·Sv/y in Fukuoka Prefecture by the present data. With respect to geological classification, the natural background radiation is fairly high in the plutonic rock area and low in the volcanic rock area. In the high background radiation area, the surface soil and rock contain more abundant 40K
and other nuclides from the238U
-series and 232Th
-series.

Core samples from borehole OS-2 were taken from the seafloor in the Shiribeshi trough after the 1993 offshore earthquake, southwest of Hokkaido. The physical properties, chemical composition and radioactivity of these core samples were measured. Measurements indicate that the water content, sand content and grain size changed abruptly at a depth of 9 cm from the top of the core. These changes are interpreted to indicate an incursion of a turbidite at this depth. The results of 137Cs radioactivity measurements of core samples indicate that this turbidite was a result of submarine slope failure caused by the 1993 earthquake off southwestern Hokkaido. Sediments from 11 to 23 cm depth in the core are also interpreted to be turbidites. The 210Pb
activity variation in the core samples can be used to estimate the time interval of sedimentation between the uppermost and the older turbidites, supposing that the turbidites were composed of young surface sediments at that time.

The relationship amang radioluminography (BAS-2000), two-dimentional position sensitive multiwire proportional counter (AMBIS-4000) and autoradiography using X-ray film were examined for their efficiencies for 14C
-labelled compounds. Detection efficiencies of BAS-2000 and AMBIS4000 were 0.093% and 1.35%, respectively. There was a good relationship between the two methods. On the other hand, the autoradiography was not sensitive enough to detect labelled materials of 0.018 kBq. However, distances between two shadow spaces of the labelled materials were 3.35 mm by autoradiography, 2.61 mm by BAS-2000 and 1.62 mm by AMBIS-4000.
