The tritium gas (HT) oxidizing bacteria were isolated from cultivated and natural field soils in Ibaraki prefecture ; 969 strains from the cultivated and 197 strains from the natural soils, respectively. Among theseHT-oxidizing isolates, 89% were actinomycetes, and its 13% were actinomycetes with meso-DAP in their cell wall. According to morphological and chemotaxomic analysis and, for some isolates, 16S rDNA sequence analysis, the 8 strains with gray colony color, smooth-surface spores, long spore chains, meso-DAP, galactose and mannose as whole-cell sugars, phospholipid type of II, non-mycolic acids andMK-9 (H6, 8) as the major menaquinone were identified to belong to the genus Kitasatospora.

The uptake of choline for the synthesis and release of acetylcholine and the metabolism of glucose under anoxic conditions was investigated in brain slices by bioradiography using [N-methyl-11C] choline ( [11C] choline) and [18F] 2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose ( [18F] FDG ) . [11C] Choline uptake and the release of accumulated11Cradioactivity in brain slices decreased with anoxic treatment, whereas [18F] FDG uptake increased. The decrease of [11C] choline uptake and the11Cradioactivity accumulated in striatal slices were recovered by acetyl-L-carnitine, an acetyl-donor. However, this effect was not seen in cerebral cortex. These results indicate that choline uptake for the synthesis and release of acetylcholine in brain are energy sensitive. The cholinergic dysfunction in ischemic brain might be improved by compensating for energy loss.

(Objectives) Various natural extracts are manufactured and on sale as health food products, which are raising popular consciousness of being ft, because they are considered effective or suppressible for cancer. in the current experiment, we measured the immunological activity, antitumor effects, and radioprotective effects of β-1, 3-D-glucan (Macroglucan) extracted from bread yeast.
(Experimental Methods and Materials) Macroglucan of 0, 200, 400, and 800mg/kgwere administered intraperitoneally toC3H/HeJmice, respectively. The antitumor effects of Macroglucan were examined by measuringNKandLAKcell activity and tumor volume. Change in weight, survival, and microscopic manifestation of the intestine were evaluated in theC3H/HeJmice received total body irradiation to measure radioprotective effect of Macroglucan.
(Results and Discussion) According to measurements of cellular cytotoxicity, levels ofNKandLAKcell activity were significantly higher in the group administered Macroglucan than in the control group. Macroglucan's role in immunological activity was suggested by the observed suppression of tumor growth in the Macroglucanadministered group. That group also experienced suppression of weight loss after irradiation in the experiment for radioprotection, and a consequent increase in the survival rate compared with the control group. Protective effects appeared in photomicrographs of the intestinal cells. These results confirmed Macroglucan's radioprotective effects. These effects may be related to the suppression of infection accompanying immunological activation due to Macroglucan administration, antioxidant activity, and radical scavenging capacity.

The radiation control system for automated locks, personal status, and recordings in the database was developed atLaboratory of Nuclear Science (LNS), Tohoku University. It consists of theProgrammable Logic Controllers (PLC) for the entrance system andWindows PC.ThePLCis controlled withFinsGatewayandCompoleton theWindows PC through an ethernet. TheSQL Server 2000was also installed on theWindows PC for database management. In the system, personal data such as destination, purpose, working hours and radiation dose are stored in the database. Furthermore, monthly report of personal data can easily be printed out by using the system. Personal status can be checked by a status monitor of the accelerator in the operation room and the entrance of the radiation controlled area, etc.
