The geese and ducks living in the five lakes of Nagano Prefecture have been studied during the course of years 19494951 with respect to their habitat selection, the densities of population and feeding habits. From the results of observations, they are classified into three types of assemblages, i. e., the surface feeding, diving and fish eating ducks. Their kinds and population densities seem to be different due to the trophic degrees of lakes in which they live, and may be a good index of the production of those bodies of water.
1. The assemblage of diving ducks inhabits usually the lakes of mseoto eutrophic types.
2. The assemblage of fish eating ducks is found only in eutrophic lake.
3. The assemblage of surface feeding ducks lives in the lakes of all the trophic types. The proportion of its occurrence increases in oligotrophic lake than in eutrophic one, and the lakes of the former type is usually occupied by this assemblage only.
