Some limnological features are studied of the Mikata Lake Group consisting of four lakes, Mikata, Suigetsu, Hiruga and Kugushi, and of the influence of the neighboring three out of them on the biological metabolism in a meromictic Lake Suigetsu. Both lakes, Hiruga and Kugushi, which open to the sea, contain a large amount of salt water, while Lake Mikata, situated in the innermost part of the group, is fresh water. Meromixis of Lake Suigetsu, situated in the center, results from the entry of two different waters, fresh water through Lake Mikata and salt water through the lakes of Hiruga and Kugushi. The deeper salt water of Lake Suigetsu stagnates. The mean resident time of salt water is estimated as 20-40 years. On the lake bottom, sulfate oxygen is used for bacterial decomposition of organic matter, because the circulatory supply of upper oxygen-containing water is quite limited, and as a result high concentrations of sulfide, total carbon dioxide and ammonium accumulate in the deeper water. In the boundary layer between the upper fresh and the deeper anoxic salt water, a marked photo- and chemosynthetic carbon assimilation takes place by sulfur bacteria using the sulfide and other decomposition products supplied from the bottom. The supply of organic matter from Lake Mikata and the inflow of sulfate-containing salt water through the lakes of Hiruga and Kugushi are indispensable for biological metabolism in Lake Suigetsu.

During the period from October 1971 to February 1972, the chemical analyses of the water of 18 main rivers in Mie Prefecture were carried out three times to make clear the difference of water qualities between those inflowing the Bay of Ise and those flowing in Kumano-nada (the Sea of Kumano).
The results of analyses of the river waters in terms of PO4-P, NH3-N, NO2-N and NO3-N are given in Table 1.
The rivers inflowing eastwards the Bay of Ise have the water containing organic substances in higher concentrations, derived mostly from urban sewage, while those flowing southwards in the Sea of Kumano seem to keep relatively natural conditions. The statistical data regarding the outflows of each component in question in both groups of rivers are summarized in Tables 4 and 5. The outflows of PO4-P were nearly similar in quantity to each other between two groups of rivers, while those of nitrogen compounds were found to be markedly different between them.

Forty-five dammed lakes have been investigated during the years 1972-1973, regarding particularly the animals inhabiting the bottom of them. Those lakes cover most of the representative dammed lakes constructed for various purposes in Japan. (Table 1). The vertical distributions of water temperature and oxygen amount dissolved in water are shown in Figs. 1-6. The oxygen curves, especially the hypolimnetic declines, as well as the indicatory species of phytoplankton were suggestive to the writer to establish a classification of the lakes in question on the basis of their benthonic animals.
Regarding the bottom-inhabiting animal taxa, the Oligochaeta and the Chironomidae (larvae) were the main components in most lakes, except a few lakes in which Asellus and Gammarus (both Crustacea) occurred.
In the lakes of the oligotrophic type, in which the quantities of hypolimnetic oxygen were enough to support benthonic animals, two subtypes can be distinguishable : the Tubifex sp. I. type and the Endochironomus type.
The lakes of the eutrophic type can be divided into the four subtypes, i. e., the Tubifex sp. II. type, Chironomus plumosus type, Chironomus plumosus-Tubifex sp. III. type, and the Chironomus plumosus-Chaoborus type. In most of such lakes dissolved oxygen in the hypolimnion entirely disappeared in mid-summer. Among the lakes of the latter three subtypes, all of which are characterized by the occurrence of Chironomus plumosus, eutrophication is progressing in various stages as the following order :
    Chironomus plumosus type→Ch. plumosus-Tubifex sp. III. type→Ch. plumosus-Chaoborus type.
