    Vertical distributions of particulate protein, RNA and DNA were surveyed in 15 lakes in central Japan in late summer. Average concentrations of chlorophyll a, protein, RNA and DNA in the photic zone of these lakes were 1.6-185.5 mg/m3, 143-4565 mg/m3, 24-2086 mg/m3 and 1.0-46.8 mg/m3, respectively. Concentrations of particulate protein and nucleic acids, especially of DNA, showed marked vertical changes in stratified lakes. The changes were rather small in homothermal lakes. In wellstratified eutrophic lakes, concentrations of protein and nucleic acids were much higher in the hypolimnion than in the epilimnion.
    The ratios of RNA/protein and DNA/protein fluctuated vertically. Higher values for the former were found in upper layers of extremely eutrophic lakes and those for the latter were detected in lower layers of stratified eutrophic lakes. A high DNA/protein value was found at the same depth with concentration-maximum of bacteriochlorophyll.

    Concentrations of chlorophyll a, protein, RNA and DNA in surface samples from 42 lakes and ponds in central Japan in late summer were 1.2-688mg/m3, 68-11300mg/m3, 6-3500mg/m3 and 0.4-145mg/m3, respectively. Each concentration (Y) of protein, RNA and DNA in surface samples was related to chlorophyll a concentration (C) as Y=aCb, where a and b are constants. The value of b was smaller than 1 in all cases of Ys. The ratios of protein, RNA and DNA to chlorophyll a were inversely related to chlorophyll a concentration. An inverse relation was also found between the attenuation coefficient of light and the protein/chlorophyll a or DNA/chlorophyll a. The RNA/protein ratio was related to chlorophyll a concentration, but the DNA/protein ratio was not related.
    The protein and RNA concentration showed highly significant correlation, and chlorophyll a concentration correlated significantly with the magnitude of respiration. No significant relation was, however, found between DNA concentration and the respiration.

    The standing crop of phytoplankton and photosynthetic characteristics of algal communities, together with the physico-chemical nature of water, were investigated in 9 lakes of a barren rocky area near Syowa Station (69°01′S, 39°35′E) in Antarctica. Chlorophyll-a amount ranged from 0.36 to 1.57 mg chl-a/m3 for surface water and from 52 to 121 mg chl-a/m2 for benthic algal communities. Percentage of chlorophyll a to total chlorophylls ranged from 23 to 45%. Typical shade-type photosynthesis with strong light inhibition at high light was observed both on the phytoplankton and benthic algae. Mean photosynthetic rate under light saturated condition was 0.94 mgC/chl. a mg/hr for phytoplankton and 1.2 mgC/chl. a mg/hr for benthic algae. Addition of nitrate to lake water stimulated the photosynthesis. Calculated values of daily primary production of phytoplankton and phytobenthic communities were 3.3-15mg C/m2 and 740-1480mg C/m2, respectively.

    The exchange rate of CO2 between the atmosphere and Lake Suwa, a eutrophic lake in Nagano Prefecture (Japan), was estimated based on a floating box experiment.
    The diurnal variation of the exchange rate of CO2 indicated that the ratio of photosynthetic rate to respiratory rate including organic matter decomposition is highest at 15 o'clock and lowest at 3 o'clock.
    The seasonal variation of the average daily exchange rate of CO2 indicated that the absorption flux of CO2 occured during the period from early spring to middle summer and the evolution flux of CO2 during the period from late summer to late autumn.
    The average daily absorption rate of CO2 on 17-18 July 1973 was estimated at 1.3 CO2-C g/m2/day, when the water bloom of Microcystis developed.
